Brisbane Grammar School is a non-denominational boys’ school of about 2000 students (Years 5 to12) overlooking the Brisbane CBD. Purpose the role

The purpose of the Sailing Director role is to develop, plan and execute objectives in line with the School’s strategy that will establish the School as a leader in Sailing programs.

The Sailing Director maintains an atmosphere of courtesy and respect and an environment of support and kindness, in line with the School’s core values.

Key Areas of Focus

Execute the BGS Sailing Program

Develop, plan and coordinate the Brisbane Grammar School Sailing Program from years 7-12:

  • Create, monitor, and report on goals and objectives for the BGS Sailing Program across Years 7 to 12, including (but not limited to):
    • Collaboration with the Head Coach in development of a distinct framework of safety protocols and guidelines, representing the ethos of BGS Sailing
    • Design and development of age and team specific performance goals, training aims and sessions that meet the BGS Sailing Framework
    • Utilisation of integrated IT solutions that add to the Sailing Program
    • Completion of annual performance review of the Program
  • Develop, implement, oversee, and monitor student development and across ages and grade. 
  • Schedule and supervise trials, camps, competitions, tours, tournaments, and special events.
  • Plan, implement, oversee and supervise pre-season training during weekdays and weekend session’s enabling preparatory and high-performance training. 
  • Support the implementation of Yr. 11 &12 Core performance development of the technical component. 
  • Coordinate activities required for competition and game days in relation to internal requirements and Schools and Foundation Cup needs including scheduling teams, boats etc.
  • Liaise with the Director of Sports Performance as a review of individual coach’s implementation of the BGS Sailing Framework and capacity to value add to the program.
  • Oversee and implementation of appropriate professional development across the breadth of coaches.
  • Recommend lists of Colours and Awards

Provision of professional administration

Ensure the smooth running of the Sailing Program by completing administrative tasks efficiently:

  • Complete all administrative duties on behalf of the BGS Sailing Program (reports, meeting attendance) required by the school and other governing bodies e.g. RQYS. 
  • Undertake annual stock-take of equipment, prepare and work within a budget.
  • Draft, oversee and implement asset registry and yearly renewal.
  • Plan all student and staff travel, and related expenses.
  • Prior to engagement liaise with the Director of Sports Performance in relation to staffing, including (but not limited to:):
    • Staff scheduling  
    • Maintaining accurate staffing levels including succession planning, recruiting, interviewing, and hiring
    • Ongoing compliance in line with the school’s policies.

Engage the Community 

Leads communication and sharing of information with the community, including PR, to ensure maximum exposure for Sailing Program:

  • Act as the primary point of contact for all queries related to the Sailing Program
  • Communicate and maintain strong relationships within the Sailing community on behalf of BGS, encouraging ‘Old Boy’ and staff involvement.
  • Arrange and facilitate all necessary communications related to the sport.
  • Manage the Sailing Support Group including facilitation and coordination of all AGMs, volunteers, etc.

Culture of learning and BGS values 

Deliberately articulate and live the BGS values:

  • Proactively identifies personal development goals and works with the Director of Sport and Activities to realise developmental goals through purposeful plans.
  • Role models BGS values and a culture of learning at all times
  • Supports team projects to improve BGS staff culture, staff capability and change management. 

Employment Status

This is a seasonal position:

  • Term 4 - Sundays - holidays and development program
  • Term 1 - In Season - weekdays (possible Wednesday's) and weekends.
  • Term 2 - Possible involvement with 1st Teams attending Nationals

Experience, Qualification and Skills

  • Able to acquire and maintain a positive notice for Working with Children (‘Blue Card’)
  • Coaching qualifications in relevant sport (preferred), or equivalent experience
  • Experience in managing, scheduling and coordinating the specific sport.
  • 3+ years’ experience in a similar role
  • Ability to drive and manage teams to meet short and long-term strategic goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with students, parents and staff.
