The Global Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) team has a vision to make Amazon the Earth's most safety centric company. Our associates obsess about our customers, and we obsess about them. As we continue to grow throughout APAC region, we are looking for a leader to ensure the highest standards of safety in our operations network in Australia. The Sr. Manager, WHS will be responsible for leading the WHS support to operations within Australia region, executing company policies and ensuring compliance to all applicable local and regional regulations.

By leveraging lean principles and kaizens, they will lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce conditional and safety risk in our processes to ensure a safe and healthful working environment for our Associates. A successful Sr. Manager, WHS will demonstrate the ability to build trust and confidence with the Operations team and inspire change through providing comprehensive risk assessments and data analysis.

This leader will possess excellent program, environmental and ergonomic knowledge, and be able demonstrate this expertise when working with Operations. This leader must be an effective communicator and send clear, concise and consistent messages, both verbally and in writing. They will instruct and train Operations Leaders in Amazon policies and assist the operations site teams in incorporating our standards at their site. They will also work to identify best practices and incorporate these into our standards to continuously improve the landscape.

This leader will be a problem solver, determining the strategic direction for their network programs, initiatives and the resources that are required to deliver the compliance assurance and life safety goals. They will lead a diverse and talented team, responsible for managing and developing multiple site/ central WHS employees.

This role will be based in Sydney, Australia

Key job responsibilities

• Management of safety strategy and delivering solutions that address operational safety and health issues across certain Operations in Australia.

• Build trust and confidence with the in-country Operations team, Regional and Global WHS teams and other stakeholders; influencing change through comprehensive risk assessments and safety data analysis.

• Provide guidance and oversight to ensure compliance to all applicable local/regional regulations and Amazon WHS Policies.

• Help coach Senior Operations and WHS Leaders in safety leadership, regulations and Amazon WHS policies, and assist their regional teams in incorporating WHS standards at their sites.

• Measure sites’ performance against published requirements in WHS policies. Identify a plan for the site to implement and fix all identified deficiencies.

• Analyze WHS metrics and review weekly and monthly incident trends to discover trends to rationalize the allocation of appropriate resources to areas where the risk is highest.

• Ensure site leadership and Associates are trained and knowledgeable of their responsibilities under each policy. Audit the quality, delivery (including qualifications of the trainer), and effectiveness of all required training.

• Perform frequent site audits to identify all non-compliance equipment and/or processes at the site. Implement solutions to eliminate exposure to these risks and prevent injury at sites. Audit record-keeping practices and Gensuite entries to be aligned with global standards and local regulations.

• Spend time at sites and seek input from teams, Associates and leaders on WHS improvement opportunities. Ensure open communication on status of progress and resolution against these suggestions.

• Lead a team of different Site WHS leaders. This individual must set the right expectations and benchmarks and hold the team accountable. They will need to create and execute development plans for their team members, give frequent feedback, coach and mentor as required.

• Demonstrate the ability to evaluate WHS talent and build appropriate bench strength for current and future business needs.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Environmental, Health, Ergonomics, or a related field.

• 10+ years of relevant experience of increasing responsibilities in safety, or environmental programs in manufacturing, logistics, production, or service operations.

• Possess a thorough understanding of local/regional regulations and the ability to work with these and company policies.

• Experience developing and implementing safety strategies and programs.

• Experience implementing lean principles and process improvement in an operational environment.

• Experience leading change in multiple site environment.

• Flexibility regarding working hours

• Ability to travel 25-30% of time

Preferred Qualifications

• EHS specialist, Master’s degree preferred. Certified Safety Professional (CSP). OHS Professional Certification will be well regarded

• Experience within supply chain, operations or customer support in distribution, transport, retail or manufacturing, with mix of exempt and non-exempt employees at a site of at least 250 people

• Experience in a fast paced, changing/growing organization, multinational and complex corporate contexts.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including comfort in collaborating with site and senior Operations leaders.

• Ability to develop and implement department goals and strategies
