Private sector financial development is essential to the promotion of successful and sustainable economies in low- and middle-income countries around the world. Sound and efficient financial markets can ensure that resources are allocated where they are most productive, assisting job creation and spurring economic growth. IFC's goal is to prioritize investment in the financial sector because it promotes development in all other sectors.

The Financial Institution Group (FIG) is one of IFC's key Departments responsible for a significant portion of IFC's business volume, profitability, and development reach, approximately 40%. FIG engages in a wide range of sub-sectors including Microfinance, SME, Gender, Climate, Insurance, Capital Markets, Housing, Distressed Assets, and other areas, with both investment and advisory services delivered globally to IFC's clients through IFC's global network.

FIG Europe Regional Industry Team is seeking Investment Officer to be based in Vienna with good regional market and industry experience, with a focus on structured finance projects portfolio supervision. It is also expected that the Investment Officer will help grow and develop projects across the region.

Duties and Accountabilities:

  1. Lead the portfolio supervision of multiple portfolio projects which may involve restructurings, rescheduling, capital increases, equity sales, etc.
  2. Perform credit and risk assessments, financial projections, covenant compliance reviews, and monitor changes to risk flags to determine the performance of the assigned portfolio.
  3. Support FIG Europe management in supervision of portfolio of structured finance transactions such as risk-sharing facilities (RSF) and significant risk transfers (SRT).
  4. Supervise and ensure the quality of portfolio reporting information prepared by junior staff, providing broader industry, sub-sector and country perspective into project risks and issues.
  5. Lead the execution of investment projects as appropriate, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, overseeing the technical as well as strategic aspects of the project.
  6. Use financial competencies and personal influencing skills to overcome impasses and lead negotiations to a successful outcome.
  7. Develop innovative and appropriate financial structures for straightforward transactions and more complex ones, as required.
  8. Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, global and regional private businesses, banking and multilateral partners to further develop the sector and to develop specific investment opportunities.
  9. Support FIG Europe strategy development and implementation.
  10. Coordinate closely with credit, legal, treasury, and other internal support units to find solutions to the specific investment or client challenges.
  11. Identify and evaluate opportunities to increase the social development impact of new or portfolio projects.
  12. Mentor more junior staff on all aspects of IO work.

Selection Criteria:

  1. MBA or other equivalent Master's degree in finance or management.
  2. At least 7 years of experience in finance with a proven track-record of sourcing, structuring and closing investments, as well as active portfolio management of debt and equity investments.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of industries, industry trends and opportunities in the sub-region countries, and understanding of local issues.
  4. Strong financial and credit skills; demonstrated ability to structure a variety of financial instruments (debt and equity).
  5. Proven analytical experience on structured products including on RSFs and SRTs. Ability to perform regular monitoring of these portfolios and identify risks.
  6. Good understanding of IFC's financial instruments including typical investment conditions and key structuring terms.
  7. Business development and client relationship skills, track record and ability to focus on client's needs effectively.
  8. Ability to interact directly and independently with the management of potential clients, of financial and technical partners as well as government officials.
  9. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Fluency in any other European languages will be a strong plus.
  10. Strong inter-personal skills, ability to interact effectively with clients and colleagues from various cultural backgrounds.
  11. Ability to mentor analysts/other more junior staff.
  12. Genuine commitment to sustainable development and to highest ethical standards.
  13. Willingness to travel extensively.
