ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is the specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability. The mission of UNIDO is to promote and accelerate inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) in Member States, as recognized by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UNIDO’s mandate is fully recognized in SDG-9, which calls to "Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation".
The Directorate of Technical Cooperation and Sustainable Industrial Development (TCS) oversees the Organization's development of capacities for industrial development as well as industrial policy advice, statistics and research activities. The Directorate also ensures the application of strategies and interventions for sustainable industrial development related to Environment, Energy, SMEs, Competitiveness and Job creation, as well as Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence.
The Division of Decarbonization and Sustainable Energy (TCS/DSE) assists Member States in the transition to a sustainable energy future through the application of renewable energy solutions and the introduction of low-carbon technologies and processes.
The internship positions are located under the Division of Decarbonization and Sustainable Energy, and are offered throughout the year, subject to availability and successful assessment of selected applicants.
The duration of an internship at UNIDO is between three to six months, is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work under the supervision of a staff member and shall cover all costs associated with their internship.
GENERIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Intern(s) will work under the direct supervision of a project manager designated by the Director of the Division.
The Intern(s) shall be engaged as follows:
- Exposed to the regular core functions of the Division and have the opportunity to observe day-to-day operations.
- Contribute to the division’s technical cooperation portfolio by performing self-contained research activities.
- Engage in other special emerging projects that may enhance the learning experience of the Intern.
MINIMUM ORGANIZATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Age: Minimum 20 years old on the first day of the internship.
Education: Enrolled in a university degree programme; or begin the internship within one year of completing a university degree; or completed a university degree and be sponsored as part of an academic or development programme.
Field of specialization: Industry decarbonization, low carbon technologies, climate change mitigation/adaptation, development studies, climate finance, economics, international relations, business administration, engineering.
Languages: Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is an asset.
Other skills: Basic knowledge of climate change technologies and policies, and familiarity with climate mitigation and adaptation strategies is an asset.
