About the Role


As the Lecturer in Statistics/Statistical Data Science, you will contribute to the teaching and research efforts of the Mathematical Sciences within the School of Science. You will make contributions to the delivery of programs. More specifically, you are responsible for carrying out teaching activities within Undergraduate, Masters and Graduate Diploma programs and for maintaining and advancing your scholarly, research and/or professional capabilities. You will develop and engage in quality research projects in areas related to those of the statisticians within the Mathematical Sciences and that are aligned with the University's research focus areas.


You will be expected to work collaboratively and collegially with fellow academics within the teaching team, and update colleagues and students on developments in their subject area or specialisation. You may also be responsible for course coordination. You will be expected to develop, productivity-driven networks across RMIT and with local and national, internal and external partners.


To be successful in this position, you'll have:



  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and deliver statistics, mathematics, and statistical data science courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including teaching of large classes, online delivery and use of different statistical software languages.
  • Ability and willingness to produce high quality curriculum or course materials in a data-centric modern area of statistics, statistical data science or statistical machine learning suitable for undergraduate and postgraduate mathematics and statistics courses in the School of Science, and in other schools in the STEM College requiring mathematics and statistics teaching within their programs.
  • Ability to undertake course coordination role and to implement innovative approaches to student-centred learning and quality improvement.
  • Ability and willingness to supervise Work-Integrated-Learning (WIL) projects of undergraduate and post-graduate students.
  • Emerging research track record and outputs which will contribute to existing research focus areas in the Mathematical Sciences, and which are evidenced by, for example, publications, development of new research initiatives, applications for competitive research funding, or engaging with industry partners. Preference may be given to candidates whose research is related to the Statistical Modelling and Data Analytics' research focus of current academic staff in the Mathematical Sciences and, in particular, to candidates with experience or interest in statistical learning and statistical data science.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills appropriate for interacting with higher degree by research candidates, staff, and industry, together with a strong commitment to teamwork and multidisciplinary collaboration.
  • Mandatory Qualifications: PhD or equivalent preferably in an area of modern statistics, modern statistical data science or statistical machine learning.
