About the company

The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) is a not for profit, membership-based organisation leading the way in surgical performance, professionalism and patient care in Australia and New Zealand.

With service to our members at the forefront of our business, we support ongoing learning and development for our surgical workforce of more than 7,000 surgeons and 1,300 surgical trainees and Specialist International Medical Graduates.

RACS is on an exciting journey to transform the way our members engage with us by making improvements across many aspects of the College - from learning and development to technology and governance. We are focusing on collaboration and innovation to better serve our members and to enhance the contribution of surgeons to the community.

About the role

The Queensland and Northern Territory Audits of Surgical Mortality (QASM & NTASM) review all deaths associated with surgical care. The review process identifies areas of clinical management which can be improved. QASM and NTASM are funded by Queensland Health and NT Health and are programs of RACS in collaboration with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (RANZCOG), and the Anaesthetists (NT only).

The role involves being Chair of the QASM Committee and supporting the NTASM Chair as a member of the NTASM Committee. Both Committees meets 2 times a year and oversee the projects, to support the running and success of the audit programs. A key aspect of the role is to lead QASM and NTASM in the upcoming redevelopment of the national program (ANZASM). ANZASM is a collaborative arrangement between RACS and fully funded by the jurisdictions to guide developments in line with the Australian Safety and Quality Commission framework for clinical quality registries (CQRs).

The current Clinical Director, Dr John North FRACS is retiring from this role. You will support QASM and NTASM, providing project oversight, and considerable input and direction for the redevelopment of processes and outputs. The Clinical Director also actively supports the engagement of health services/hospitals and surgeons to participate and fully comply with the programs. A close liaison with Queensland Health and NT Health, and other relevant stakeholder groups is also a key part of this role.

A demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, with excellent organisational and time management skills are required, as are superior verbal, and written communication skills. The role requires working in a team of administration and researcher staff. The ability to review data analytics and statistical processes for the interpretation and communication of meaningful outcomes is also required.

The currently position requires approximately 10.5 hour each week. Remuneration will be at the appropriate senior specialist level.

Enquiries can be directed to Professor Guy Maddern, Chair, ANZASM, ANZASM.RACS@surgeons.org.
