PMB Defence is a world leading manufacturer of submarine battery systems, which started delivering and supporting the main storage batteries for Australia’s Collins Class Submarines in 1989. PMB Defence has now grown its business by winning various local and international contracts, supplying both traditional as well as new technology submarine battery systems to Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and other international customers by specialising in lead acid, nickel zinc and lithium battery system solutions. About the role

We are seeking a highly motivated and proactive Senior Mechanical Engineer to join New Technology Team. PMB’s New Technology team is the innovation centre of PMB Defence. The team are focussed on developing new products for our customers across conventional and nuclear submarine platforms, as well as investigating new and emerging opportunities outside of our traditional space. This is about more than just batteries; this is about building systems that enhance the capability of our customer's products. 

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you would be responsible for bringing an innovative and strong technical mindset to the team to support the development of new system designs from concept through to manufacture and installation. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the Mechanical engineering design and development of new and existing projects and products.
  • Working with the project manager to meet internal and external milestones and budgets.
  • Preparing and leading technical design reviews – internally and externally. 
  • Working with multi-disciplinary team of mechanical, electrical, electronic, and electrochemical engineers and technical officers to develop a cohesive technical solution.
  • Mentoring junior engineers in product design and the development process
  • Leading the development and test programs for new products.
  • Planning and overseeing the testing of new products including shock, environmental and thermal tests. 
  • Approving technical reports such as design documentation, test procedures and test reports to be issued to the customer. 
  • Providing expertise and advice as required to production departments in support of existing contracts.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Extensive experience in design and product development (end to end), with skills in structural and thermal design
  • Experience working on Defence projects within Australia
  • A strong technical skill base and the desire to continue to grow your technical knowledge – a genuine passion for technology and engineering
  • Self-motivation and ability to self-manage. This person will be the subject matter expert for the mechanical design of products
  • Experience with designing and executing verification and validation activities.
  • Knowledge of and experience with thermal and structural design related to military shipboard equipment
  • Knowledge and experience with packaging of electrical and electronics equipment
  • Experience in Systems Engineering and Safety
  • Knowledge and experience with Python programming language

Prerequisites

  • Be eligible to successfully obtain and maintain a NV1 Australian Defence Security Clearance (must be an Australian Citizen) 
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment medical and Drug & Alcohol screen
  • Ability to travel occasionally overseas and interstate
