Qualifications & experience

The successful candidate must have:

  • A minimum of 2 years post admission experience in criminal law.
  • A thorough understanding of criminal law procedure and practise.
  • The applicant must be able to undertake bail applications, sentences, defended hearings, and have experience doing so. 
  • A successful applicant must be able to autonomously take carriage of criminal law matters from start to finish.
  • Have excellent writing skills. A successful applicant must be able to draft legal representations and written submissions.
  • Be able to prepare advices to clients.
  • Be able to attend to negotiations with the prosecution, including in case conferences.
  • Instruct counsel in complex trials and sentences.
  • A passion for criminal law and a real desire to work as a criminal lawyer is a must.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • Take carriage of a diverse range of criminal law matters from start to finish. Including summary matters, indictable matters, and complex crime.
  • Appear in sentences, defended hearings and bail applications in all jurisdictions.
  • Instruct counsel in complex criminal law matters.
  • Negotiate matters with prosecuting authorities.
  • Manage clients.
