About QIMR Berghofer:

QIMR Berghofer is a world-leading translational medical research institute focused on improving health by developing new diagnostics, better treatments and prevention strategies, specifically in the areas of Cancer, Infection and Inflammation, Brain and Mental Health, and Population Health. Based in Herston, Brisbane and working in close collaboration with clinicians and other research institutes, QIMR Berghofer is home to more than 600 scientists, students and non-research staff.

About Corporate Affairs and Fundraising:

The Corporate Affairs and Fundraising (CAF) team is responsible for positioning, promoting and protecting QIMR Berghofer, as well as raising vital funding through philanthropic endeavours, corporate partnerships and community engagement to support the remarkable life-saving work of the Institute's researchers. The CAF team is focused on delivering high quality media, marketing, government relations, community engagement, communications, events, fundraising and philanthropy activities, aligned to the Institute's strategic objectives.

Role Purpose / Responsibilities:

As a Senior Media and Communications Advisor, you will be responsible for:

  • Proactive and strategic identification of potential media stories and opportunities for QIMR Berghofer
  • Develop comprehensive media strategies to maximise positive media coverage of announcements
  • Build and maintain relationships with key state, national and international media
  • Prepare scientifically correct and highly engaging media releases and articles for both lay and scientific audiences
  • Receive and respond appropriately to media enquiries
  • Work with other team members to coordinate images, animations, video and audio for the media where appropriate
  • Coordinate media events, including interviews and media conferences
  • Provide media training to QIMR Berghofer scientists and spokespeople
  • Media monitoring, analysis and reporting
  • Research, compile and produce a wide range of corporate communications materials including briefing papers, correspondence, staff updates, publications, newsletters and other documents for internal and external stakeholders

About you:

To be successful in the role, you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in journalism, communications or other relevant degree
  • Media, public relations and corporate communications experience
  • A network of media contacts
  • An ability to mitigate risks and issues
  • Strong news judgement, including demonstrated experience in identifying newsworthy stories
  • An ability to successfully develop, implement, monitor and evaluate media and communications plans and strategies
  • Excellent writing skills, including the ability to write highly engaging and clear content for different audiences. A very high level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a cooperative attitude, negotiating skills, diplomacy and tact
  • Excellent time management skills and organisation, with the ability to balance competing priorities, meet tight deadlines and stay calm under pressure

Remuneration: This is a full-time, permanent position. The salary range is $99,306 to $108,037 p.a. plus super and salary packaging.
