Our client, a leading engineering consultancy firm, is seeking an exceptional Principal Control Systems Engineer to join their Generation & New Energy team in Melbourne. This pivotal role will allow you to enhance your capabilities while contributing to iconic projects that drive future-ready outcomes for clients and communities.

As a Principal Control Systems Engineer, you will collaborate with talented professionals and support the wider Generation & New Energy team. Your primary responsibilities will include leading the design of industrial control systems, communication systems, and collaborating on the design of electrical protection systems for power stations.

Competitive salary package: $180K - $190K, commensurate with experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical expertise in power generation, leveraging your significant experience in thermal and renewable generation, including demonstrated experience delivering projects with gas turbines (OCGT and CCGT), coal-fired power stations, and hydro power stations.
  • Undertake and lead the design of power station control and instrumentation systems, including PLC and DCS-based systems, functional safety systems (AS 61511), and EEHA designs.
  • Conduct and lead the design of control and protection system communication systems, including DCS data highways, control system networks (Ethernet and serial-based), and IEC 61850 protection networks, employing common industrial protocols (e.g., Modbus, DNP3, Ethernet/IP, OPC).
  • Collaborate in the design of power station secondary systems in coordination with electrical engineers, including electrical protection systems and excitation systems.
  • Ensure compliance with Australian Standards, relevant regulatory acts, legislation, and best practices.
  • Mentor junior engineers in technical aspects, project delivery, and client relationships.
  • Provide technical review and verification of engineering drawings and reports.
  • Contribute expert technical input to a diverse range of projects in line with quality systems and client requirements.
  • Establish project scope, time, cost management systems, and coach others in managing competing demands.
  • Establish project quality, risk management, communications, and integration systems.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or equivalent
  • Chartered status CPENG and registered (RPEQ, RPEV)
  • Significant experience in thermal and renewable generation, with a minimum of 10 years' relevant experience
  • Demonstrated delivery of several complex power generation projects
  • Extensive relevant experience, with some time spent within a consultancy (essential)
  • Competence in providing key technical expertise across a broad range of high-profile projects
  • Proven ability to manage risk on substantial projects
  • High-level skills in applying safety in design practices and processes
  • Demonstrated instances of delivering best client outcomes/options, resulting in cost/time savings
  • Recognized profile within industry associations and active involvement in shaping the industry
  • Competence in monitoring and managing the scope of multiple projects of varying complexity and size
  • Experience in preparing and reviewing high-level and complex technical reports
  • Business development experience
  • Extensive experience in applying QA and OH&S systems
  • Experience in supervising graduates and managing engineers and senior engineers
  • Strong experience in client relationships
  • Proven track record in building technical capability of others (training & mentoring) and transferring technical expertise within the organization
