Meelup Management has been asked to assist in the recruitment process for an Operational WHS Manager.
The Company
Our client is listed on the ASX and has grown considerably into a loyal and stable workforce. Their core business is in mineral resources with all of their current operations within Australia. This role is based in Perth Corporate Office,
The role/ opportunity
As the title suggests, operational safety and health is an integral part of the organisational culture and operations. Their progress towards a mature operating culture with this as its core is well advanced and needs to stay on this trajectory. Remaining static is not an option and the baton is ready for the next runner in this regard.
Whilst the title suggests a broad diverse background and experience is an advantage, there are some very strong attributes and absolutes that are needed to enable the business and its various operations achieve their full potential.
Primary responsibility will include the central operations of the Corporate Health and Safety group ensuring all aspects of WHS Documentation including Management Plans, Audit and Review processes.
There is nothing new in terms of the role and expectations of the role but rather how the person in the role carries out these primary areas of responsibility and accountability.

- Love what you do and the energy you can create in others and relationships you build in every organisation you have been a part of
- Teach, coach and develop the leaders and influencers of the business in all aspects of Health and Safety so that over time, they need you less from an operational point of view- as opposed to reliant on you.
- Possess an accurate sense of where your time needs to be invested before it is bought to your attention, to lead before asked, to follow when needed.
- Fluent in language and examples to match the audience you are working with from Corporate and Board to your team to the crew on the ground in the operations. (not just theory, statutory regulations or pre start words)
- Able to mobilse and develop your direct reports to grow and develop. Manage team members effectively.
- Know when to be a doer, know when to be a leader and know when to be a follower. This is not a static, “king of the castle” role where you reside over others. Whilst there is a small team you will be responsible for, it will be a hands on roll at times and as such, the candidate needs to be able to get their hands dirty and do what is needed- when it is needed and know when to go to others.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the statutory requirements in theory and application and use this understanding to engage others in the operational space to lean into the outcomes not be dragged into the outcomes.
- Be able to monetarise the cost and benefit of health and safety and show the influence your team can provide at each level- supported by a strategic plan
- Improve bench strength within the businesses before it is needed
- Currently this role has a 70% operational 30% strategic focus. Knowing where to invest the time for the business is a key attribute needed..
- Demonstrate your ability to work with different operations, their “local” leadership towards the business wide standards.
Ideally you have
- Tertiary or Diploma qualification In Occupational Health and Safety; (Essential)
- 10 years’ experience within mining/safety industry in WHS role; (Essential)
- MS Office software experience, specifically Word, Excel,
- Tertiary qualifications in Human Resources Management or equivalent.
- An optimistic approach and style of engagement with others at all levels
- An advanced level of leadership insight of yourself and how you engage, lead and influence others including stakeholders
