Our Coles Digital function is significantly growing as we continue to invest in delivering the best online shopping experience for our customers. We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to join our growing Data and Business Intelligence team to continue to build our future data capabilities.

About the Role

As our Senior Data Engineer, you will spearhead the development of a semantic layer within Coles Digital Snowflake environment to enable intuitive and efficient access to data for our business. You will lead design, implementation, and optimization of data pipelines and architectures using Snowflake ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance.

About you and your skills

  • 5+ years' experience as a Senior Data Engineer with a focus on Snowflake & Microsoft Azure cloud platform
  • Experience working with Snowflake, including data modelling, SQL optimization, and performance tuning.
  • Proven track record of designing and building semantic layers within Snowflake or similar platforms.
  • Deep understanding of data governance principles and experience implementing governance frameworks.
  • Establish and enforce best practices for data governance, security, and compliance within Snowflake and Power BI environments.
  • Data architecture development
  • Democratisation of data for business use
  • Data Tool Familiarity: Proficiency in working with OLTP and OLAP data tools of both on-premises (e.g. Oracle Database, MS SQL SERVER) and cloud (Snowflake, Databricks, Azure Data Factory)
  • SQL Mastery: Advanced knowledge in developing data transformations using SQL.
  • Data Modelling: Skill in modelling data using star/snowflake schemas.
  • Data Extraction Flexibility: Ability to extract data from various formats (JSON, CSV, Excel, XML) and sources (flat files, APIs, databases) across different data timeliness (batch, near-real time, streaming).
  • Beyond SQL: Proficiency in using languages other than SQL (Python, Java, or Scala) for data transformations.
  • ETL Standards: Establishing (and adhering to) ETL delivery standards.
  • Object-Oriented Programming: Experience with implementing object-oriented data pipelines using non-SQL languages.
  • Data Visualization: Familiarity with data visualization and BI tooling, preferably Power BI.
  • DevOps (CI/CD): Knowledge of setting up git repositories and deployment processes for managing data outputs and automated testing.
