The Port of Townsville Limited (thePort) has been actively shaping the future of Townsville and NorthQueensland for 160 years.

Today, we are Australia’slargest port for zinc, lead, copper, sugar and fertiliser.Additionally, we handle more motor vehicles and containerised goodsthan any other port in Northern Australia. The goods that flowthrough our ports are grown, mined, manufactured and used to betterthe lives of more than 800,000 people across a vast catchment area,spanning from Hinchinbrook to the Burdekin and west to MountIsa.

About the role andyou

T he primary function of theFinancial Accountant is ensuring the effective and efficientprovision of financial accounting servicesconsistent with the Port of Townsville Limited’s( ‘thePort’ ) Corporate and OperationalPlans .  Provide best practiceservices in relation the accuracy, compliance andtransparency of the Port’s financial operations, in accordancewith Australian AccountingStandards and consistent with the Port ’s Corporate andOperational Plans.

As the Financial Accountant you will:

  • Preparationof monthly financial reports, including income statement,balance sheet and cash flowstatement.
  • Review andanalysis of all financial data, including review ofpayments made, identifying discrepancies and resolve issuesin a timely manner.
  • Providereporting and research services for major projects andoperations.
  • Reconciliation of Internal Control Accounts,including the chasing up of invoicing, tender and contractdeposit refunds, and statements ofexpenses.
  • MaintainStrategic Planning Model and MAR (Maximum AllowableRevenue) Model.
  • Prepare andinput monthly adjustment and accrual journal entries intothe FMS (Financial Management System) in preparation forthe end of month financial reportingprocess.
  • Oversight ofthe work for other bodies tasks.
  • Assist theManager Financial Services in the provision of accountingservices to the Port.
  • Prepare andinput BAS, FBT, fuel rebates and maintain chart of accountsfor customers and suppliers.
  • Health andsafety risks identified, and appropriate controlsimplemented.
  • Perform anyother duties as allocated by Manager FinancialServices.
  • Participatein port emergency responses and associated training, asdirected to assist with successful restoration of the Portback to an operating capacity in the event of anemergency.

Experience you’llneed

To be successful in the role, youwill require:

  • Degreequalification in accounting, commerce, or equivalentdiscipline
  • Professionalcertifications (e.g., CPA, CA) aredesirable
  • CurrentQueensland C class Driver’sLicence
  • Experiencewith accounting procedures, general financialadministration, and clericalprocedures.
  • Knowledge ofintegrated financial managementsystems.
  • Knowledge ofthe Australian AccountingStandards 
  • Goodorganisational and task managementskills.
  • Soundcommunication and interpersonal skills necessary to provideinformation to all levels of internal and externalcustomers.
  • An abilityto maintain confidentiality when dealing with commerciallysensitive matters is consideredessential.
  • Experiencewith the Microsoft Office suite of products, particularlyExcel
  • Demonstrated experience in computer based applications, including accountingsoftware, databases and integrated financial management systems.
