Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

Main purpose of job:

The main purpose of this role is supporting and assisting the Fiscal Crime Liaison Officer (FCLO) in achieving their objectives as set by His Majesty’s Revenue & Customs and in maintaining and strengthening the relationship between host agencies here in Australia and HMRC. 

This involves providing essential administrative and logistical support to the the FCLO’s work in respect of the pursuit of criminal finances and other assets; and reducing threats to UK tax regimes from organised crime, tax avoidance and evasion. 

This role is critical to the success and smooth running of this post, and you don’t need to be a government specialist. We recruit people with a variety of skills and backgrounds, and look to people who are motivated and can demonstrate core competences. 

You will work as part of a team of two, so work is dynamic, with a requirement to work on own initiative. Despite being a small team, you will also play a part in supporting the wider British High Commission. This role is suitable for those with strong organisational skills and excellent interpersonal skills in working with external key stakeholders.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Conduct office administration duties under the instructions of the Fiscal Crime Liaison Officer (FCLO) and in accordance with policy and standard operating procedures. Duties include: records management; maintaining office accounts; maintenance of the asset register and gifts and hospitality register; planning travel and visits; and organising events.
  • Compile verbal and written briefings and reports as directed, including regular monthly management reporting. 
  • Provide open source research support, especially exploitation of information sources. 
  • Maintain oversight of any regional projects as required including; supporting monitoring and evaluation of their impact; monitoring budgets to ensure value for money; and producing narrative reports to deadlines. 
  • Monitor FCLO office mailbox and telephone so that messages are responded to in a timely fashion and / or directed as required. 
  • Occasional attendance at events outside of normal working hours.
  • Support the broader work of the British High Commission and the FCLO network as directed by the FCLO. 
Essential qualifications, skills and experience
  • Strong administrative and report writing skills
  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills with an ability to multi task to meet deadlines
  • Strong Interpersonal skills with the ability to work as part of a wider team, often remotely.

Passport/Visa Requirement:

Due to security clearance requirement, this role is only open to nationals of the UK, US, Canada, Australia And New Zealand. Clearance involves vetting, including of financial circumstances.

Salary is at AU$ 87,753 per annum (paid out monthly), plus 11% superannuation.

Appointment is subject to an AFP records check and UK security clearance.

Open to Australian citizens, permanent residents, and partners/ dependents of UK-based diplomatic staff currently posted in Australia.

  • In addition to the duties with this job normally entails, you may from time to time be required to undertake additional or other duties as necessary to meet the needs of the High Commission, including playing a part in the corporate life of the mission and supporting any crisis response.

Working patterns:

The British High Commission supports and promotes flexible working times but due to working with teams in the UK, there may be occasions for some calls to be outside of core hours. Although flexibility arrangements and remote working can be catered for subject to line management agreement, due to the nature of the work main duties are office based. 

Normal working hours for full time employment are 38 hours p/w Monday to Friday

The overall package also includes the standard 14 days of public holidays that the UK in Australia Network all works to as well as 22 days annual leave.
