Missions are a strategy by which CSIRO is seeking to help solve significant national challenges by partnering and using the breadth of CSIRO's capabilities to concentrate on fewer bigger problems.


The
AquaWatch Australia Mission's goal is to use state-of-the-art space technologies, in-situ sensing and simulation modelling to improve management of inland and coastal water quality across Australia, and provide early warning of harmful events.

The Mission was launched in March 2023.

The Mission has developed an AquaWatch Australia Science and Technology Roadmap, and is now moving to the implementation phase of this Roadmap.


We are seeking a
Deputy Mission Lead to support this implementation process and help demonstrate the global impact this Mission aims to have.

This new role will involve engagement internally across CSIRO with capability leaders whose staff are deployed to Mission projects, the CSIRO Missions Office that oversees the governance and reporting of all Missions including AquaWatch, and externally with Mission partners, investors, collaborators and end users of Mission services and research.


Your duties will include:

  • Delivery: The Deputy Mission Lead will coordinate the implementation of the AquaWatch Science and Technology Roadmap, in close cooperation with AquaWatch Work Package leads and their implementation partners.
  • Coordination: The Deputy Mission Lead with work closely with aligned CSIRO Business Units, in order to reach the organisational goal of 30% of impact science aligned with Missions.
  • Engagement: The Deputy Mission Lead will proactively foster codesign of the AquaWatch information system with partners, priority endusers and communities, and ensure that AquaWatch water quality monitoring and forecasting services are closely aligned to their information needs.
  • Monitor, Evaluate, Learn and Report: Work with the Mission Lead and AquaWatch Project Manager to monitor regular progress against key performance indicators, work with the Mission Lead, Project Manager and Work Package leads to identify, monitor and mitigate risks, and support Work Package leads in performance reporting of the Mission.
  • Influence and leadership: Represent the AquaWatch Mission in internal and external forums as required; contribute to the leadership of the AquaWatch Mission team, including deputising for the Mission Lead when required.

Salary:

AU$146,20- AU$161,767 per annum plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

Essential

  • Tertiary level qualifications in a relevant field (e.g. water resources management, aquatic Earth observation, sensor networks, or highperformance data integration and analytics), combined with managerial qualifications and significant experience and depth of understanding from either a research or industry perspective.
  • Proven research team management and complex project management experience, in at least one area of relevance to the AquaWatch Australia Mission (e.g. water resources management, aquatic Earth observation, sensor networks, or highperformance data integration and analytics).
  • Proven ability to form productive and enduring collaborative relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Experience in designing, establishing and managing multipartner, crossdisciplinary projects to solve significant scientific delivery challenges.
  • Record of generating and documenting impact from research.
  • Ability to communicate to a range of audiences (e.g. science teams, investors, collaborators and end users of research) tailored to their specific needs.
Desirable

  • Extensive network in the Australian water resources and/or earth observation sector and the industries and communities that they serve.
