The Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) is an independent statutory authority responsible for preparing and conducting criminal prosecutions in Victoria on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Matters prosecuted by the DPP and the OPP involve serious crimes or matters that are of significance to the fair and effective operation of the Victorian criminal justice system.The OPP consists of the Solicitor for Public Prosecutions and a staff of approximately 475 providing legal and corporate support to the DPP, the Chief Crown Prosecutor and Crown Prosecutors in the exercise of their independent roles in the criminal justice system.

The Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) has an opportunity for a highly motivated individual to join our organisation as a Principal Solicitor Advocate within the Advocacy Team.
The incumbent's core work will involve preparing and appearing (for up to 80% of their available time) in highly complex matters at various stages of the criminal process including committals, plea hearings, bail applications and County Court appeals.
The incumbent is expected to identify and respond to new and emerging legal issues and will require interpretation of the legal environment, decision making where there is limited precedent and creativity in applying concepts to situations.
The position is Melbourne based however occasional travel to regional Victoria may be required.
Commencement of the role is to take place no sooner than Monday, 24 June 2024.
About the Role:
- Prepare and appear in complex committal hearings in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court and in list work (including committal mentions, bail applications, summary jurisdiction applications and pleas) in both Melbourne and regional courts.
- Provide formal and informal mentoring, advice and training to OPP staff within the Advocacy Division.
- Engage proactively in discussions with staff of the OPP, Solicitors for accused and police informants aimed at identifying and pursuing opportunities for early resolution of matters.
As our ideal candidate you will have:
- Extensive working knowledge of criminal law and procedure, particularly familiarity with sentencing provisions as they relate to Drug and Alcohol Treatment Orders is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience appearing as an Advocate in highly complex cases.
- Strong negotiation skills, with extensive experience taking a proactive role in the settlement of matters.
