We are a 24-hour multi-disciplinary emergency and referral hospital in the heart of Melbourne, Australia. We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Veterinary Manager to join our dynamic team in a frontline leadership and management role. This is an exciting opportunity to work closely with our Emergency & Critical Care specialist to help lead and develop the ECC service. This role is part of CARE’s senior team, which includes specialists in surgery, medicine and emergency and critical care. The role incorporates clinical responsibilities as well as management of the department and veterinary ECC team.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve operational efficiency and organization within the Emergency/ICU department.
  • Maintain regular communication and strategic alignment with the Business Manager and Heads of Department.
  • Organize regular Emergency/ICU veterinary staff meetings in collaboration with the Clinical Director for operational and educational purposes.
  • Act as the primary contact for veterinarians within the Emergency/ICU department for operational concerns or feedback.
  • Uphold and actively endorse the company vision, mission, and values.

Operational / Clinical

  • Provide a high standard of clinical care to the animals presented to the ECC/ICU Department at CARE.
  • Participate in the veterinary clinical roster within the ICU; 50% of the roster is to be clinically based. The distribution of shifts to be at the discretion of the Veterinary Manager.
  • Supervise and support ICU clinicians. Occasional weekend or evening/night attendance may be required.
  • With Head Nurse ECC, CS manager, and HM develop and maintain effective workflow and triage processes.
  • Monitor and ensure appropriate communication practices both with referring veterinarians and patient owners as well as within the Emergency/ICU department and between the Emergency/ICU department and other sections of the hospital.

Workforce Management And Planning

  • Develop effective strategies for managing absenteeism within the veterinary staffing of the Emergency/ICU department.
  • Plan and implement Emergency/ICU veterinary rosters and shifts.
  • In concert with the Nursing Manager, recruit veterinary and nursing staff for the Emergency/ICU department as approved by general management.

Clinical Quality And Safety

  • Support the implementation of systems to ensure patient safety and support the response to clinical incidents and continuous improvement.
  • Assist in the organization of meetings, rounds, and Journal clubs.

Sustainability And Growth

  • Monitor, research/review, and implement appropriate charging practices within the Emergency/ICU department.
  • Establish and maintain rapport with referring veterinarians, clients, and other staff members of CARE.
  • Identify opportunities and develop strategies to improve the client experience in the ECC department.
  • Drive Performance and Development activities for the ECC team to promote engagement and retention.
  • Identify opportunities to improve workflows and reduce waste in the department.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Veterinary degree registrable in Victoria with a proven history of senior leadership.
  • Ideally a member of the Australian & New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in Emergency & Critical Care or equivalent.
  • Experience using EzyVet and Smartflow veterinary software.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Adherence to professional conduct, accuracy, and detail.
  • Effective communication skills with clients and team members, demonstrating confidence, empathy, and a commitment to continuing education.
  • Alignment with CARE’s Vision & Values, showcasing strong decision-making, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to handle pressure and stress with initiative, resourcefulness, and sound judgment.
  • Professional conduct, compliance with legislation, and adherence to OH&S procedures.
  • Teamwork, time management, and efficient prioritization, coupled with a strong work ethic and preparedness to go the extra mile for CARE.
