The intern will be part of the Illicit Crop Monitoring Programme (ICMP) at UNODC Headquarters, Vienna, Austria. The ICMP is located in the Programme Management and Development Unit (PDMU), Research and Analysis Branch (RAB), Division of Policy Analysis and Public Affairs (DPA). ICMP promotes the development and maintenance of
a global network of illicit crop monitoring systems in coca and opium poppy cultivating countries. ICMP provides overall coordination and technical support to annual illicit crop surveys at the country level and monitors the socio-economic conditions of households that are living in areas with illicit crop cultivation and/or areas where illicit crops
have been replaced by alternative development initiatives. For this purpose, it conducts research on alternative development, develops new survey initiatives, analyses and validates survey results and publishes survey reports.

Internships with Offices of the United Nations Secretariat are UNPAID and full-time, i.e., 5 days per week (40 hours).

**Responsibilities**:
The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to:

- Support the development of automated tools for remote sensing and geospatial data analysis through cloud-based platforms such us Google Earth Engine and/or Microsoft Planetary Computer.
- Assist in the management, analysis and quality control of geospatial and RS data related to illicit crop monitoring.
- Liaise with Universities, research centers, UN networks for cooperating in remote sensing related research.
- Assist in presenting results in reports, graphs, tables and maps, as well as assist in report writing and in preparing presentations on the key findings of the research.
- Assist in the analysis and visualization of geospatial data including remote sensing data.
- Keep abreast of innovative technologies in the field of remote sensing and GIS.
- Perform other tasks related to the implementation of the programme, as requested.

To qualify for this internship, the following conditions must be met:

- Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). (OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION);
- Studies/Degree in the field of remote sensing, geography, agricultural sciences, environmental science, statistics, development studies, or related field.
- Knowledge of remote sensing theory, principles of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial data, and statistical/analytical skills are required.
- Familiarity with machine learning techniques for modelling geospatial and RS data is desirable.
- Applicants must have a keen demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. The interns should also have a keen interest in the countries covered by the illicit crop monitoring programme, including Afghanistan, Bolivia, Colombia, Lao PDR, Mexico, Myanmar, Nigeria and Peru.
