This position is located in the Editorial Control Unit (ECU), English, Publishing and Library Section (EPLS) of the Conference Management Service (CMS), Department for General Assembly and Conference Management in Vienna. CMS operates administratively under the Division for Management (DM), United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV). The incumbent will be working under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Unit.

**Responsibilities**:
Within delegated authority, the Editor is responsible for the following specific duties:

- Edit complex or politically sensitive material, normally without revision, to ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with United Nations standards, policy and practice.
- Carry out more extensive editing where required, including rewriting, abridging and restructuring texts for greater readability and better logical sequence.
- Consult with author departments and translation services, and carry out research to clarify ambiguities and rectify substantive errors.
- Serve as Programming Officer in the absence of the Chief.
- Assist in drawing up guidelines for editors and in determining desk-top publishing standards and practices.
- Train junior or short-term editors and revise their work; and provide feedback and input for performance assessment.
- Assist staff of substantive units and delegations with the drafting of documentation and provide advice on matters concerning editorial policy and practice.
- Act for head of unit in his/her absence.
- Perform other work-related duties as required.

Education
A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status is required.

Job - Specific Qualification

Work Experience
A minimum of five (5) years of experience in editing, translation, précis-writing, self-revision, verbatim reporting, copy preparing, proofreading, production editing or in another relevant language field is required.

Of the aforementioned five years of experience, three (3) years of experience in editing within the United Nations, is desirable.

Experience in editing texts relating to drugs, crime and outer space affairs is desirable.

Experience in editing complex/web-based multilingual publications and in publishing production techniques is desirable.

Experience in preparing training material/templates and outreach is desirable.
