In the lab of Andreas Bachmair (Max Perutz Labs, University of Vienna, Austria), there is a four-year postdoctoral position available, starting in March 2024.

**About the Bachmair **lab**

We are interested in protein turnover in plants. In particular, we investigate pathways for recognition of amino-terminal degradation signals. We study ubiquitin ligases (in particular, PRT6 and BIG of Arabidopsis) in collaboration with structural biologists. We have established an expression system for Arabidopsis ubiquitin ligases and their substrates in the budding yeast S. cerevisiae, which allows to study them without the redundancy present in plants. Complementary to this approach, we use proximity labeling, mutants, and chemical inhibitors as tools for in planta studies. We devised novel assays for beta glucuronidase-based model substrate quantification in plants, to assess the impact of mutations and inhibitors on protein turnover. These methods shall serve to elucidate mechanisms and biological functions of the respective pathways.

**About the position**

The position is part of the SFB program “Targeted Protein Degradation” at the Vienna BioCenter campus. The Vienna BioCenter offers excellent scientific support by facilities for Mass Spec, RNA/DNA large scale sequencing, Bio-Optics, EM and other methods that require specialized expertise. Seminars held by invited speakers and on-campus interactions between research groups foster knowledge distribution. There is an active community life for students and postdocs, and Vienna is among the top cities worldwide regarding quality of life.
