Our youth practice operates within the criminal practice and aims to deliver holistic support to young Aboriginal people facing legal challenges, while advocating for systemic change in youth justice issues.Apply now to join our dynamic team and make a meaningful difference in the lives of our clientsWhat we offerSalary packaging options up to $18,450 per annum tax freeRemote allowance of $3,300 per annum (if applicable)Annual airfare allowance6 weeks annual leave3 weeks personal leaveAbout the roleWe are seeking a qualified legal practitioner for the Senior/Intermediate Youth Solicitor position, with a minimum of 3 years post-admission experience. You will support the Senior Criminal Solicitor (Youth Advocate) and work closely with a dedicated youth team, including youth lawyers, social workers, and administrative staff.What you'll be doingProvide high-quality legal advice and representation to Aboriginal clients charged with criminal offences.Collaborate with other staff to address the disadvantages faced by Aboriginal communities.Handle cases in the Youth and Supreme Courts, including duty lawyer services, bail applications, hearings, and trials.Offer comprehensive advice on a range of criminal law issues to clients.Represent clients in complex legal matters, including committal hearings and appeals.Implement and monitor policies and guidelines as directed.Conduct work at circuit (bush) courts when necessary.Collaborate with the Senior Criminal Solicitor (Youth Advocate) in training and mentoring youth lawyers, interns, and paralegals.Identify systemic issues impacting Aboriginal youth in the criminal justice system and assist in formulating responses.Selection CriteriaEligible for admission as a legal practitioner in the Northern Territory.Understanding of the issues affecting the involvement of Aboriginal people in the criminal justice system, with demonstrated cultural sensitivity.Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.Strong time management skills and the ability to perform under pressure, managing high-volume workloads within tight deadlines.Proficiency in computer literacy, including correspondence and report preparation.Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team and seek guidance on cultural issues as necessary.Previous experience working with Aboriginal people is highly desirable, particularly in Youth Court matters.RequirementsAbility to obtain a satisfactory "Working with Children Clearance" (Ochre Card) upon commencement.Satisfactory criminal history check and no history of disqualification from employment by a legal practice.Ability and willingness to travel to remote areas.How to applyApplicants for this position must submit a cover letter and resume addressing the essential criteria.Enquiries can be sent to ****** information including position descriptions can be found on NAAJA's website www.naaja.org.auSuitably qualified Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are encouraged to apply.
