Inspector Scientific Officer

We have permanent opportunities available within our WorkSafe Service Industries and Specialists within our Asbestos branch and Occupational Health and Hygiene branch, located at Cannington.
We are also seeking to establish a list of suitably qualified applicants through this process, who may be considered to fill permanent and fixed-term, full-time and part-time opportunities that may arise over the next twelve (12) months following the finalisation of the selection process.
About the role WorkSafe WA plays an integral role in upholding healthy and safe workplaces in Western Australia, reducing workplace incidents to ensure workers return home safely every day.
We drive workplace change through education, specialist advice and enforcement.
The Asbestos Team is looking for a subject matter expert in the area of Asbestos who is able to undertake complex and sensitive regulatory and technical activities and provide expert advice to internal and external stakeholders of WorkSafe.
The Occupational Health and Hygiene Team is looking for Inspector Scientific Officers who can carry out workplace inspections, enforce the WHS legislation, and provide advice on occupational hygiene issues with limited guidance.
As a WorkSafe Inspector, you will have a vital role in ensuring that workplaces are:
adopting appropriate risk management strategies to reduce workplace hazards that can cause multiple and repeat fatalities and serious injuries;working to improve the management of psychosocial hazards;protecting workers from health hazards such as harmful dusts;consulting and involving workers in designing and implementing safe systems of work; andcomplying with work health and safety laws.With investigative skills and experience in a regulatory, safety or general industry, you will be responsible for:
carrying out workplace inspections and taking appropriate enforcement actions when health and safety laws are breached;conducting investigations into workplace incidents or accidents;assessing any possible breaches of the Work Health and Safety Act 2020 or equivalent relevant legislation;gathering evidence and preparing briefs to legal, making recommendations about prosecutions and presenting evidence in court; andpromoting and delivering work health and safety presentations, providing information to workplaces.Our team members come from a wide range of professions, and with no two days ever being the same, problem solving comes naturally to us.

A Bachelor of Science Degree or equivalent qualification relevant to occupational hygiene and / or asbestos.Experience in gathering and interpreting data, appraising evidence and evaluating arguments.Experience in applying occupational hygiene and / or asbestos and WHS knowledge in a workplace setting and to conduct investigations.Experience in dealing with confronting situations and gaining stakeholder cooperation.This role is identified as having a higher likelihood of exposure to potentially traumatic events.
This is any distressing experience or situation in which an individual's physical or psychological wellbeing may be threatened.
This could involve attending or investigating safety incidents or fatalities, interacting with affected, distressed and / or aggressive people, and exposure to objectionable material such as records containing potentially traumatic content.
The department has specific Potentially Traumatic Event Response Support processes and training available for this role.
