Job ResponsibilitiesProvide expert anaesthetic and analgesic care for elective and emergency procedures, excluding sub-specialist neonatal, infant, paediatric, and cardiac surgical patients, within this hospital as a major tertiary referral center.
Participate in the after-hours on-call roster.Conduct outpatient consultations, pre-operative assessments, and other specialist anaesthetic services as needed.Oversee the delivery of patient care in the field of anaesthetics, including the management of complex clinical cases.Support the Clinical Director of Anaesthetics in coordinating medical workforce operations within the department, including managing rosters, annual leave, and sick leave.Lead education, training, and research initiatives within the Anaesthetic Department and other relevant hospital areas, fostering a culture of learning and professional development.Collaborate with the Clinical Director to ensure robust clinical governance and patient safety, addressing incidents, complaints, and implementing learnings from past events to improve care quality.Conduct annual performance reviews, facilitate personal development plans, and manage job planning for medical staff in the department.Work closely with the Medical Director and Clinical Director of Anaesthetics to optimize resource utilization and manage the departmental budget effectively.This role offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to a leading healthcare service, ensuring the highest standards of care and driving continuous improvement in anaesthetic services.
The DepartmentThis hospital has approximately 600 inpatient beds and serves as the primary tertiary referral center for a vast region.
It plays a crucial role in meeting the growing trauma and emergency surgery needs of the area.

The hospital features 14 operating theatres, performing approximately 16,000 procedures annually.
The Anaesthetic Department provides comprehensive out-of-theatre anaesthetic services, including endoscopy, bronchoscopy, interventional cardiology, interventional neuroradiology and endovascular clot retrieval, radiation oncology, medical imaging, mental health, and birth suite care.
It also manages an acute pain service.
The department supports a mix of elective sub-specialty surgical activities and emergent services, along with anaesthetic clinics, acute pain service delivery, and a robust training curriculum.
The Department of Anaesthesia comprises more than 60 senior staff, including full-time specialists, part-time staff specialists, and visiting medical officers (VMOs).
It is supported by over 35 anaesthetic registrars, including trainees from ANZCA, general practice, emergency medicine, and intensive care, alongside 5 resident medical officers (RMOs).
Subspecialty rosters cover cardiac anaesthetics, paediatric anaesthetics, and hyperbaric medicine.
The department is accredited by ANZCA for three years of training and serves as the tertiary hub for the Rotations, managed by the Queensland Anaesthetic Rotational Training Scheme (QARTS).
