About the opportunity There is currently one (1) permanent – full-time position available for immediate filling.

An exciting permanent opportunity has become available in the Aquatic Science and Assessment Branch.
As a Principal Research Scientist (Stock Assessment), you will lead a team of fisheries stock assessment scientists and be involved in advancing the methodology used for fisheries stock assessment modelling in Western Australia.
Your key responsibilities will include developing and enhancing advanced stock assessment models and providing expert scientific advice to policymakers and stakeholders.
You will play a crucial role in expanding and implementing software tools for stock assessments, with proficiency in software platforms such as Stock Synthesis, JABBA, or similar.

In this leadership role, you will manage staff, foster collaborative research opportunities, and provide technical guidance to fishery managers and executives on the interpretation of stock assessment outcomes.
You will also lead the preparation of technical reports and scientific publications, communicating findings to both colleagues and external stakeholders.
This is a unique opportunity to apply your expertise in quantitative fisheries stock assessment, contributing to solutions for global fisheries sustainability challenges.

We are looking for individuals with: Broad range of experience in quantitative fisheries assessment modelling, with proficiency in statistical model fitting and model development in fisheries stock assessment and statistical estimation packages such as Stock Synthesis, CASAL, SAM, BUGs, ADMB, TMB, RTMB.
Demonstrated computer programming ability in R, C++, Python, or similar language.
Proven track record as a fisheries scientist with significant contributions to the sustainability and management of aquatic resources.
Team leadership and development skills, with experience in fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment through coaching, mentoring, and supporting staff.
Strong initiative in research with a history of building productive stakeholder relationships and driving innovative projects.
Experience and/or knowledge of Management Strategy Evaluation (desirable).
