Assistant Director International Engagement & Cultural Diplomacy About International Engagement and Cultural Diplomacy
The International Engagement and Cultural Diplomacy (IECD) team sits within the OCEO and builds and maintains key relationships and provides strategic insight and explores and delivers on strategic options to extend the reach and expertise of AIATSIS Internationally, through the means of mutually beneficial Memorandum's of Understanding whereby Joint Work Plans, often reciprocal exhibitions, cultural exchanges, and diplomatic practices are shared.
Our engagement is informed by the diverse nature of Indigenous peoples', cultures, stories, and histories from around the world and has a direct benefit to all communities we work with.
The team works closely with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), through specific countries' region desks, their respective Posts and the Office of the Ambassador for First Nations Peoples as well as Embassies in Australia and overseas.
By connecting and sharing knowledge across borders, the IECD team builds strong ties with other countries via institutions and diplomatic missions to create opportunities for First Nation centered cultural exchange and knowledge sharing.

About the Role
The Assistant Director, International Engagement and Cultural Diplomacy (IECD) is a key leadership position within the Institute.
This role focuses on relationships and AIATSIS' contribution to enriching global First Nations efforts across collection and care of cultural heritage material, education, research, and culture revitalisation.
By working collaboratively with others both domestically and internationally.
This position reports to the Director, IECD.
Key responsibilities of the role include:
actively identify, build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders including with international partners across government, with the Diplomatic Corp and First Nations communities promote a better understanding of Indigenous peoples' culture and heritage both domestically and internationally.
manage the development, implementation and review of AIATSIS' International Engagement Strategy.
manage the establishment of effective administrative systems to support international engagement.
provide high level advice through verbal and written communication including briefing and correspondence to the Director, IECD and AIATSIS senior leaders to inform decision making.
manage the operation of the team, including reporting, resource management, staff management and development, recruitment, and team planning.
manage the logistical support for international delegations, internal and external stakeholder meetings and key events.
Cultural Capability
Roles at AIATSIS require candidates to have an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and proven culturally appropriate engagement and communications skills.

is flexible and willing to tailor approaches to create culturally appropriate solutions.
Our Ideal Candidate
To be successful in this role, you will have well developed stakeholder engagement skills with a high level of cultural competency and diplomacy and a strong understanding and experience in international and First Nations engagement.

proven ability to manage competing priorities demonstrating resilience through change while maintaining delivery of high-quality outcomes.
use sound judgement, discretion and strong communication and negotiation skills and escalate sensitive or urgent requests through appropriate mechanisms.
excellent communication skills both written and verbal to confidently present information in a clear and concise manner that focuses on key points.
extensive experience engaging, collaborating, negotiating and maintaining positive relationships with key stakeholders, both internal and external, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities to achieve the goals of the program and organisation.
highly motivated to work with autonomy and also collegiately in a small team.
ability to travel if required.
ability and willingness to obtain and maintain a Base Line security clearance.
