The Faculty of Science teaches approximately 7000 full-time student equivalents, with an academic staff of approximately 500 and general staff of 300.
The Faculty is one of the largest and most complex faculties of UNSW Sydney.
It comprises the School of Aviation, Biological Earth and Environmental Science (BEES), Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (BABS), Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), Mathematics and Statistics, Psychology, and Physics.
It also includes several major Research Centres and field stations.

The Senior Technical Manager, Helium Liquefier will manage the operations and provide technical and managerial direction of the helium liquefier at UNSW Sydney for the Faculty of Science.
The position will service stakeholders, including researchers within the faculty and across the University, by leading the development of systems, policies, procedures and guidelines, relating to the safe use of the helium liquefier within UNSW.

About the role • LEVEL 9 - $143k - $151k plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
• Fixed Term – 2 years
• Full-time (35 hours per week)
The role reports to the Faculty Executive Director, Faculty of Science.

Specific responsibilities for this role include: Establish and lead the operational activity of the helium liquefier to ensure financial and operational objectives and goals are reached.
Develop and implement guidelines, processes and procedures that align and support the research activities of the facility stakeholders, including Schools from the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering, MWAC, and industry collaborators.
Implement and maintain high level communication, consultation and negotiation skills with key stakeholders, both internal and external, including building a network of industry contacts and utilising influential input with stakeholders.
Lead the development of systems, policies, procedures, guidelines, and related documentation relating to the safe use of the helium liquefier and related equipment/systems, overseeing implementation and ensuring compliance and best practice, including but not limited to implementation of high standards of system and process design, including documentation and archiving in line with regulatory requirements.
Lead the helium liquefier team with supervision of other staff and students as required.
Drive and coordinate the helium liquefier team interaction with UNSW Faculties of Science, and Engineering, MWAC, industry collaborators and other Divisions within UNSW, such as Estate Management and UNSW Canberra.
Represent the Liquefier Facility at other UNSW work areas, advisory groups, meetings and other activities and lead/manage other related activities as required.
Work closely with Finance and the Faculty leadership to develop, manage and monitor the budget for the helium liquefier.
Provide strategic advice, management, and operational support to helium liquefier stakeholders.
Organise procurement support for the team through establishing and managing a procurement workflow.
Develop and maintain database systems for reporting purposes.
Provide technical and managerial direction for process improvement related to the functioning of the helium liquefier and associated administration.
Liaise with Procurement and vendors to ensure continuity of supply of consumables and equipment maintenance while delivering the best value for stakeholders.
Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.
Ensure hazards and risks (psychosocial and physical) are identified and controlled for tasks, projects, and activities that pose a health and safety risk within your area of responsibility.
About the successful applicant (Selection Criteria) To be successful in this role you will have:
A relevant tertiary qualification with substantial subsequent relevant experience, including extensive management experience.
Advanced written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
Proven technical capabilities in areas aligned with cryogenics, gas and/or vacuum systems with a proven ability to apply knowledge and experience to analyse, investigate and solve technical and operational issues.
Excellent consultation, influencing and negotiation skills and proven ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders and senior management to achieve successful outcomes.
Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills and proven capacity to exercise initiative, flexibility and to be proactive in development of robust solutions to problems.
Demonstrated success working effectively and collaboratively on initiatives with a range of people at different levels within an organisation.
Knowledge of budgeting and resource allocation procedures.
High level of experience working with a range of computer systems and applications, including Microsoft 365 and other products in the Microsoft suite.
Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
An understanding of and commitment to UNSW's aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
