The Opportunity
With a desire to offer a world-class experience to our patrons, we are seeking a Head of Commercial Manager to lead our Commercial team.
The Head of Commercial is responsible for generating new commercial revenues, driving revenue growth, forging strategic partnerships, and enhancing the commercial strategy of the Club.
Essential to new commercial revenues will be introducing new categories and experiences to the market by leading the team with innovative thinking.
Working closely with the commercial team, head of leadership team, and executive team where appropriate, the Head of Commercial will enhance existing relationships, generate new business, and explore innovative and sustainable revenue streams.
Responsibilities highlight a combination of strategic commercial leadership, innovation, relationship management, business development, developing forecasts and strategies to achieve commercial targets and to ensure profitability.
The Head of Commercial will ensure positive team connection and a high-performance culture, continually nurturing and coaching, while maintaining a high level of engagement with the Club's partners, customers, and stakeholders.
The Head of Commercial defines, articulates, and implements the organisation's strategy for selling commercial products and services across new and traditional streams.
Key Accountabilities
Strategic Planning & Innovation:
Develop the Commercial strategy, ensuring alignment with the overall VRC vision and long-term goals and deliver an exceptional customer experience.
Drive VRC's vision and strategic objectives, ensuring alignment across departments.
Protect and positively enhance the VRC brand ensuring alignment with new and existing commercial partners and customers.
Lead and inspire a culture of high performance, collaboration, and continuous improvement; actively support the professional growth of others; and provide regular constructive feedback to staff to enhance team capabilities.
Lead and develop the team through regular engagement, development of plans, strategies, establishment, and review of goals for the team.
Lead the Commercial team to create and implement commercial action plans that ladder up to set KPI's for the club.
Provide collaborative leadership and work effectively with all teams to identify, develop, and maximise commercial opportunities.
Commercial Growth:
Commercial revenue drivers – new partnerships, new commercial initiatives, corporate hospitality sales, corporate memberships and suites, non-race day events (indoor and outdoor), digital sales, LED sales, tourism, international and government and VRC Partner Network sales.
Grow the Club's commercial portfolio by generating new business across traditional club assets and innovative revenue streams.
Develop and execute comprehensive commercial strategies and plans aimed at achieving annual targets and driving growth.
Collaborate with VRC Media team to develop and grow commercial media opportunities, including but not limited to broadcast, print, and digital media.
Understand our customers and partners by developing rich connections and drive our unique selling proposition in the market.
Collaborate and implement strategies that commercialise CSR programs delivered by the Community team including Melbourne Cup Foundation.
Manage the budget and resources of the Commercial team including regular performance reporting and forecasting working closely with the Finance team.
Maintain insights to market trends and competitors globally and identify new trends that set a benchmark and world-class standard delivering the club a competitive commercial advantage in the market.
Cost / Yield Management:
Grow the Club's commercial return through effective planning and management of all commercial deals, experiences, and deliverables ensuring cost and yield of all products and services is planned, managed, and reviewed.
Utilise data and analytics to lead effective high performance across all commercial drivers and identify areas of improvement and adjust accordingly to maximise all commercial opportunities.
Monitor all monthly financial data, report on budget anomalies, and ensure capital and operating expense budgets have appropriate procedures, controls, and systems to meet budgets.
Experience & Qualifications
Tertiary qualifications in a commercial, business, commerce or relevant discipline.
Minimum five (5) years' experience in a similar leadership role in a professional sports or entertainment environment or within an organisation that has widespread commercial and corporate sales activity.
Minimum ten (10) years' experience working within a dynamic and progressive professional sports, entertainment, or commercial environment.
Experience in a senior commercial leadership role required.
