This structure promotes relationship building with our clients and a deep understanding of the statutory, policy and business context in which our clients operate, while also ensuring we develop staff with expertise in specialised areas.
The key duties of the position include: The duties and responsibilities of a senior government lawyer include the provision of legal services to the department, for example the legal services indicated under the heading "The Role" above.
Senior Government Lawyers are expected to demonstrate the capabilities listed under the heading "Capabilities" below, and to comply with obligations in Commonwealth legislation and policies where relevant, for example in the Public Service Act 1999 and the Legal Services Directions 2017.
Capabilities We are seeking individuals with the following capabilities: Highly developed written communication skills, including the ability to clearly articulate technical legal arguments and draft sound legal advice.
Sound judgment and ability to think creatively and analytically to deliver innovative client-focussed solutions.

Can promote a safe working environment and to support and supervise lawyers.
Can effectively manage competing priorities within short timeframes.
A willingness to learn and develop expertise in the areas relevant to the role.
Please note, under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the APS unless the Secretary (or their delegate) agrees otherwise.
This is a designated security assessed position.
The successful candidate will have the ability to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance.
