The Legal Policy Advisor plays a key role in achieving Equality Australia's vision of a fair and equal Australia for LGBTIQ+ people, their families and communities. Reporting to the Legal Director, you will work with a dynamic team to create and protect legal and social change, ensuring LGBTIQ+ people are treated equally and with dignity and respect.About Equality AustraliaEquality Australia is a leading national LGBTIQ+ organisation built from the successful campaign for marriage equality. Equality Australia is a registered charity with a primary office in Sydney, and team members also working in Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne.Equality Australia's small but mighty team of experts in communications, legal and policy, and political campaigning have a shared commitment to creating a fair and inclusive Australia for LGBTIQ+ people, their families, and their communities.About the roleThe Legal Policy Advisor position will suit a legally qualified professional who is proactive, responsive and adaptable to change. The position requires a creative and curious mindset, experience working collaboratively with stakeholders, and a strong interest in legal policy and law reform. Reporting to the Legal Director, you will:Assist with Equality Australia's response to key legal and policy priority issues impacting LGBTIQ+ populations and work with other team members to develop advocacy and campaigning strategies to tackle them.Conduct legal and policy analysis, drafting submissions, briefing notes, research reports and other publications.Assist with political engagement including engagement on certain issues or campaigns, developing political strategies, preparing briefings and materials and meeting with decision makers.Work with the Engagement team on media and communications matters, including reviewing print, radio, social and television media content.Assist with and coordinate legal action in partnership with pro bono legal teams.Work collaboratively with other team members in relation to seminars and events, publications and marketing; and undertake some administrative tasks as required in a small team.About youYou will be admitted to legal practice in Australia and have approximately 2-4 years' post-qualification experience (or equivalent). You may have gained experience in private practice, the public sector/politics, the not-for-profit sector, or the social services/community legal sector.You will possess strong legal and policy analysis and research skills and the ability to think strategically and contribute to plans to achieve legal policy solutions to LGBTIQ+ human rights issues. Your excellent written and verbal communication skills will support your success in this critical role, together with your respectful and collaborative interpersonal skills.Any experience in legal and/or campaign advocacy, whether through litigation or engagement with political and government processes would be an advantage.How to applyMahlab is pleased to be assisting Equality Australia on a pro-bono basis.
