About the role At K&L Gates we understand the important role of patents in a company's success.
We currently have a fantastic vacancy for a junior Patent Attorney based in Melbourne, to join the Intellectual Property (Patents) practice in a casual or contractor capacity.
This dynamic, collaborative and busy practice will give you the opportunity to be involved with interesting matters across all aspects of patents.
This role presents an opportunity for a qualified patent attorney (with at least 1-3 years' experience) looking to develop their commercial skills.
You will have an unprecedented opportunity to work with highly regarded partners and senior team members, as well as local and foreign clients, in a multi-jurisdictional legal services platform.
Your activities will include: drafting, filing and prosecuting patent applications in the mechanical, electrical, software and medical device technologies, performing and advising on IP due diligence, patentability, registrability, IP strategy and freedom to operate analyses, About you You have a degree in either mechanical engineering or computer science.
Hands on experience in drafting patent specifications is essential.
You have demonstrated patent prosecution skills across mechanical engineering or computer science.
Demonstrated experience in patent searching.

You will be an excellent communicator with a strong desire to learn and get involved across all aspects of the practice including business development.
You possess a mature approach to your work and have the ability to work autonomously.
A high level of client service is expected.
A law degree as well as business development skills would be advantageous but are not essential.
