Carers Australia is the national peak body representing Australia's unpaid carers.
Carers Australia enriches the lives of carers through the creation of carer-led national policy which shapes social change and a strong carer economy.
A function that cannot be done without a strong policy manager, someone who is the perfect fit with this team as they work collaboratively to create an Australia that values and supports the contribution that carers make both to the people they care for and to the community as a whole.The Policy Manager role has been re-scoped and re-designed for the Carers Australia of 2025.
An exercise that is reflective of the innovative and forward-looking approach of the senior leadership team.
This new role recognises the need to find a policy professional who is both strategic - able to develop an informed policy position and advocacy plan - whilst also happy to dot their own i's, cross their own t's, and manage their own administration while also leading a small team.
If you read this and understand that is just what it takes to effectively operate in a small team environment, then read onSo, what will you be faced with?In terms of policy and advocacy, you will be responsible for the development of the policy strategy, and you will have the luxury of a broad range of key issues with large blocks of research to draw upon.
Your role will be to work with national stakeholders, chairing the National Carer Network's Policy Advisory Group, to prioritise the key issues and develop an advocacy plan on how to operationalise your strategy and help the organisation meet its strategic goals.You lead a team of two who are highly capable and can support you through their deep sector knowledge and experience.
In return you will provide your team with the experience and know-how of how to drive policy-change at a federal level and how to best advocate for positive outcomes for unpaid carers across Australia.

You operate with accountability and ownership, respectful of all those who provide a positive contribution regardless of their role.What about the core skills and experience?You are a skilled policy professional and have experience in the management of both policy and research.
Your experience includes developing policy, advocacy and a demonstrated understanding and/or ability to drive change at a Federal Government level.You have strong stakeholder engagement skills, with experience consulting and managing stakeholders at the state and territory level.
You are empathetic whilst also being focused on achieving results, after all you understand that the most empathetic thing you can do for unpaid carers is to advocate for change successfully on their behalf.While your policy experience is the critical factor, any exposure you have to working in the social services sector is a bonus.
Experience with health, disability or aged care would be beneficial but does not override that importance of the right cultural fit, so don't let it deter you from applying if you don't have it – a willingness to learn will be just as good.Finally, what is in it for you?If this is your final consideration, then this might be your perfect fit.
As with most small NFP organisations this is the last thing their staff consider as the motivation is so often to do things for others.
Nevertheless, it is important to the leadership team of this organisation.Due to tight funding cycles the role is initially on offer as a fixed-term contract to 30 June 2025, however there is little doubt that funding will be secured for the 25/26 financial year, so extensions are expected.
To demonstrate the ongoing commitment to staff, there is a discretionary training budget for every individual to help build capability and ensure they grow during their employment.Flexibility is important to Carers Australia, and they carry this through to their staff with a very open attitude to flexible working arrangements for those who have demonstrated their ability to deliver.
This includes working from home opportunities, which will be managed on a case-by-case basis.The salary available for this position is $115,000 plus super and access to PBI salary packaging.We have more to tell you, but first you need to apply.
