About the opportunity
A Temporary Full Time vacancy exists until November 2026 for a Senior Medical Hospital Scientist In Charge of the Immunohistochemistry section of the NSW Health Pathology, Anatomical Pathology Laboratory, at Liverpool Hospital.
This large and very busy laboratory provides a full Anatomical Pathology service to several hospitals within the South West Sydney Local Health District including Liverpool, Fairfield, Campbelltown, Bankstown, Camden and Bowral hospitals as well as privately referred work.
This full-time position is key to the continued provision of our Anatomical Pathology services.
Duties include supervising and performing all Immunohistochemistry testing, training of staff, quality control exercises, introducing new Immunohistochemistry techniques into the IHC laboratory when required, and possessing the knowledge and experience in In-situ Hybridisation techniques.

This position is responsible for delivering a range of operational Immunohistochemistry laboratory activities including the coordination and provisions of scientific and technical training and the ongoing review, development and quality management of laboratory practices to ensure compliance with operational standards and procedures, quality standards and continual process improvement.
You will be asked to perform a range of laboratory investigations and tests (manual and automated) and scientific/technical tasks by applying established methods and procedures, as directed.
You will also be asked to undertake other laboratory duties including preparation of materials and the maintenance of equipment in line with established laboratory processes, procedures and protocols.
If you are successful for an interview, you will be asked to demonstrate your supervisory/theoretical/practical experience in Immunohistochemistry as well as your computer skills associated with laboratory information systems and other computer programs that will assist you to complete your tasks in this position.

Apply now by addressing the following questions: Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification, with subjects relevant to pathology from a recognised tertiary institution.Demonstrated knowledge and recent practical experience in Immuno-Histochemical (IHC) and In-situ Hybridisation techniques, with the ability to introduce new techniques into the IHC laboratory when required.Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers, patients and clinical and laboratory staff, along with report writing skills, statistical evaluation of scientific data and the ability to effectively communicate policies and procedures.Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of accreditation frameworks, relevant standards and quality systems.Demonstrated managerial skills with experience in laboratory operations, administration and budgeting.Advanced knowledge of Pathology Laboratory Information Systems including supervision of e-based Quality Management Systems.Extensive high level knowledge of working within the relevant section of the laboratory with knowledge of the operation and maintenance of analytical equipment in a pathology laboratory.Sound understanding of legislation, policies and requirements that impact the laboratory environment including work health and safety and privacy requirements.
