The Industry Solutions Engineering (ISE) team is a global engineering organization that works directly with customers looking to leverage the latest technologies to address their toughest challenges.

In this role, you will be working with engineers from your team and our customers' teams to apply your skills, perspectives, and creativity to grow as engineers and help solve our customers' toughest challenges.
We are seeking a senior data science leader with experience in artificial intelligence (AI) methodologies applicable in physics and chemistry.
The ideal candidate should have a broad command of various AI techniques (e.g., PINNs, Deep-Learning Surrogates, Diffusion models) and their innovative applications in scientific research and development.
This role demands strategic insight to guide our expansion in these innovative areas.
The candidate should be able to assess the landscape for potential collaboration, frame business problems to guide science programs, identify leading experts and emerging players in the field and evaluate opportunities for partnerships or acquisitions.
Additionally, this role requires strong technical leadership skills, as the individual will be responsible for spearheading projects, engaging with customers and partners, and maintaining our competitive edge in applying AI to scientific discovery.
A proven record of accomplishment in a leadership role and a deep understanding of the current and evolving AI technologies in physics and chemistry are crucial for driving our team's progress and success in these dynamic areas.
Qualifications Required Qualifications: Doctorate in Physics, Material Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 8+ year(s) of applied data-science experience in the fields of physics, chemistry and/or material science. OR Master's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 10+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results) OR Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 12+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results) Preferred Qualifications: Doctorate in Physics, Material Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 10+ years of applied data-science experience in the fields of physics, chemistry and/or material science. Responsibilities: Business Understanding and Impact Leads data-science projects or teams to align with business needs and deliver value. Leverages extensive experience to drive best practices for discovering, implementing, and maintaining transformative data-science projects or teams for customers. Is proactive and eager to learn, always seeking to explore and implement cutting-edge technologies. Has utilized machine learning to develop an innovative product or business strategy with a forward-thinking approach. Modeling and Statistical Analysis Identifies new customer opportunities for driving transformative customer solutions with ML modeling. Incorporates best practices for ML modeling with consideration for artificial intelligence (AI) ethics. Develops deep expertise in specialized areas of physics and chemistry by staying abreast of current and emerging methodologies in AI and ML. Evaluation Oversees review of data analysis and modeling techniques. Ensures selected modeling techniques are appropriate and align with desired project outcomes. Decides on next steps (e.g., deployment, further iterations, new projects). Industry and Research Knowledge/Opportunity Identification Regularly speaks at conferences and events, both internally and externally, to share knowledge. Applies deep expertise to drive novel customer experiences, including early access engineering programs. Applies expertise to mitigate technical customer escalations.
Serves as industry thought leader in data science in physics and chemistry. Coding and Debugging Leads a diverse group in the gathering, integrating, and interpreting of information from multiple sources to properly troubleshoot errors and/or defects and identify viable solutions. Develops new techniques/methodologies for building solutions for a specific business need based on available data. Provides feedback on non-optimized features/solutions back to product group and explores potential for new features. Business Management Defines business-strategy goals, customer-strategy goals, and solution-strategy goals. Leads partnerships and Intellectual Property (IP) improvement. Partners with diverse Microsoft teams to identify and explore opportunities for the novel application of machine learning (ML) and other data-science tools to physics and chemistry. Leads involvement of intellectual property (IP) definition improvement. Customer/Partner Orientation Provides customer-oriented insights and solutions by understanding the business, product, data, and customer perspective. Commits to a customer-oriented focus by acknowledging customer needs and perspectives, validating customer perspectives, focusing on broader customer organization/context, and serving as a trusted advisor. Identifies opportunities and adds valuable insight by incorporating an understanding of the business, product/service functionality, data sources, methodologies to reframe problems, and the customer perspective. Interprets results, develops insights, and effectively communicates results to the customer. Leads the discussion with customers and offers pragmatic solutions that are feasible given their data limitations.
