This is an exciting role leading an excellent team who are focused on strategic policy outcomes that cut across a range of policy areas that are driving emissions reduction and industrial decarbonisation of hard-to-abate industry sectors to help position the Australian economy to achieve net zero by 2050.
Note that a merit pool will be established through this process with a view to filling other expected vacancies in the Division in addition to this role.
Who we areThe purpose of the Net Zero Industries Division (NZID) is to drive emissions reduction, enable the transition of industries and support the development of new technologies to help position the Australian economy to achieve net zero by 2050.
Providing advice to the Minister for Climate Change and Energy and Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy, the division oversees various climate change related policies, encompassing industrial decarbonisation, hydrogen strategy, and the establishment of an offshore wind industry in Australia.
The Decarbonisation Initiatives Branch is responsible for a range of programs and policy areas, focused on industrial decarbonisation, carbon management technologies, development of a transboundary carbon capture and storage industry, and management of the department's relationship with portfolio agencies, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC).
The Section focuses on policy priorities that cut across DCCEEW's decarbonisation initiatives.
Important areas include regional transition, low carbon precincts policy and critical technologies.
The team supports the Government's objective of advancing the development and safe deployment of carbon management technologies to assist hard-to-abate sectors to reach net zero by 2050.
The Section is also the department's lead for international engagements related to carbon management technologies, aiming to shape and influence policy and regulatory settings globally, while backing Australian scientific institutions working on carbon management technologies.
It provides policy advice, represents the department in international fora, and contributes to the strengthening of Australia's key international collaborations.
The JobThe duties of the role include:

Leading the development and implementation of cross-cutting policies that support Australia's transition to net zero.
Shaping Australia's international leadership on carbon management technologies through active engagement in multilateral and bilateral fora and by fostering partnerships.
Providing evidence-based strategic advice to senior executives and Ministers on decarbonisation priorities and challenges, ensuring alignment with Government objectives and emerging opportunities.
Building trusted relationships across government, industry, and research sectors to advance collaborative solutions for hard-to-abate sectors and support clean energy investments.
Overseeing a high-performing team, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement aligned with the APS values.
Ensuring effective stakeholder engagement, procurement, and project management practices to deliver results in a complex and evolving policy environment.
The position requires regular engagement with external and internal stakeholders, may require travel at times, and can on occasion necessitate work outside of regular business hours.What we are looking forSkills and capabilities

Knowledge and experience

In addition to the skills and capabilities listed, experience with policy development (including Cabinet or Budget processes) will be highly regarded.
Knowledge of the Government's energy and climate change priorities and projects would also be beneficial.
Desirable qualifications
A degree (or equivalent), or other relevant qualification, is desirable but is not essential.
EligibilityCitizenship - To be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.Security Clearance - This position requires a Negative Vetting Level 1 security clearance.
You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
Pre-employment Check - Your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process.
This process includes a requirement to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance and where required a pre-employment medical assessment, specified mandatory qualification(s) validation and a probation period of 6 months.
