We pay our respects to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Cultures, and to elders past and present.
About us
Geoscience Australia is Australia's pre-eminent public sector geoscience organisation.
We are the nation's trusted advisor on the geology and geography of Australia.
We apply science and technology to describe and understand the Earth for the benefit of Australia.

What we can offer you
When you work at Geoscience Australia you will have access to a range of benefits and the opportunity to experience a workplace culture that truly values and promotes diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging.
Our team
Geoscience Australia has the responsibility to maintain and develop the national positioning infrastructure which underpins all geospatial activities in Australia.
Through the Positioning Australia program, we are working to ensure accurate and reliable positioning information is available to all Australians.
Please visit here for an introduction to the main activities undertaken within the GNSS Analysis Team and the relevant teams across the Positioning Australia program.
Key to this capability is:
Realising and maintaining the geospatial reference frame as determined from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) observations.
Providing expert advice on the performance of GNSS and providing timely feedback on underperforming GNSS tracking stations.
Ensuring the efficiency and security of computing environments, including cloud infrastructure, the software used to develop analytic products and services, along with thorough documentation of these processes.
The role
We are seeking qualified candidates for two positions: APS6 GNSS Analyst and APS5 GNSS Data Analyst .
Both roles are vital to the ongoing support and operation of GNSS analytical products and services at Geoscience Australia by maintaining system functionality and ensuring their efficiency, security, and long-term sustainability.
The two roles share many responsibilities; however, the APS6 GNSS Analyst role is expected to work with greater independence and take on a broader scope of activities, as well as involving more strategic decision-making and leadership within the team.
In both APS5 and APS6 roles you will:
Contribute to the operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the GNSS analytical systems and services that produce our analytical products.
Engage with relevant stakeholders to provide support, troubleshoot issues, and keep them informed of any updates, changes or disruptions that may impact access, performance, or quality of our services.
Contribute to the maintenance, enhancement and modernisation of our computing environments, including cloud infrastructure, analytical software and version control systems.
Help develop and refine standard operating procedures, work instructions, and guidelines for the operation of our analytical systems.
Collaborate with the team to operate a world class GNSS analysis centre that delivers accurate and reliable positioning products to a diverse range of stakeholders.
Support the leadership team to foster a positive culture of continuous delivery, agility and user engagement.
In addition, in the APS6 GNSS Analyst role you will:
Provide current and accurate advice on GNSS activities to support the positioning program; develop and maintain knowledge and expertise in various aspects of GNSS analysis.
Collaborate with key industry, government and academic stakeholders to identify opportunities, achieve mutually beneficial outcomes and facilitate cooperation.
Report results in the form of presentations, project reports and peer-reviewed publications to deliver information to stakeholders.
Manage our relationships with other GNSS analysis centres around the world.
To be successful in either of the roles you will:
Work with a level of independence and under limited direction; taking personal responsibility for accurate completion of work within timeframes and quality requirements.
Work collaboratively and operate as an effective team member; consult and share information within the team and seek input from others.
Understand, support and promote the group's business objectives; identify problems in workflow and work to resolve them.
Build and maintain positive relationships with all stakeholders; confidently present and tailor technical information in both written and oral form to a range of audiences.
Support section management and actively contribute to and foster an inclusive culture within the team.
In addition, to be successful in the APS6 GNSS Analyst role you will:
Make time for people despite competing priorities; provide guidance and offer full support when required.
Provide clear, constructive and timely feedback in a manner that encourages learning.
Construct project plans that have clear and appropriate milestones, goals, timeframes and budgets.
Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications
Proficiency in scientific and/or data analysis programming in at least one of the programming languages: Python, C, C++, Fortran, or equivalent.
Strong quantitative problem-solving skills.
Familiarity with cloud computing environments and proficiency in version control systems, particularly Git, is an advantage.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to a variety of audiences.
For the APS6 GNSS Analyst , a solid background in GNSS analysis and/or estimation theory is required.
A post-graduate degree in a GNSS-related field or a branch of earth science, engineering, mathematics, physics, or relevant disciplines is highly desirable.
For the APS5 GNSS Data Analyst , a background in GNSS Analysis is an advantage but not a strict requirement.
