Wiener Neustadt, Österreich MedAustron EBG Vollzeit

**EBG MedAustron GmbH** in Wiener Neustadt operates one of the most modern centers for particle therapy and research in Europe. Cancer patients are treated with an innovative form of radiation therapy with protons and carbon ions. In addition to cancer treatment the facility is also used for translational research.

**Become part of the Medical Physics team as**

**PhD student in Medical Physics**:
**With a focus on independent dose calculation for carbon ion beam therapy**
**Part-time (30 hours weekly) for 3 years**:
**Challenges** you conquer**:
For each patient receiving light ion beam therapy a so-called treatment plan (TP) is created using a dedicated treatment planning software (TPS). The TPS is not only able to calculate the dose distribution within a patient, but also allows to shape it. Patient specific quality assurance (PSQA) of each TP is necessary before treatment. Typically, the PSQA is carried out with measurements being time consuming and only little specific. To overcome these limitations, the independent dose calculation (IDC) system for light ion beam therapy (IDEAL) project was launched.

This project aims to replace the measurements by a dose computation with a software independent of the TPS. MedAustron was one of the first clinics worldwide, which successfully replaced PSQA measurements with a proton IDC system from February 2021 (myQA iON, IBA-Dosimetry). The aim of the current project is to implement the IDEAL system for carbon ion IDC, in collaboration with IBA-Dosimetry, for clinical usage at MedAustron.
- Commissioning of an IDC system for carbon ion beam therapy:

- Dosimetric commissioning of the beam model against experimental baseline data
- Clinical commissioning of Gate-RTion/IDEAL with calculated (TPS) and measured doses
- Implement and validate relative biological effectiveness (RBE) models for carbon ion beams within a team
- Explore the potential of log-file based quality assurance using IDC
- Enrollment in the PhD program (UN094) at the Medical University of Vienna

**A background** that impresses:

- Programing skills for data analysis (e.g. C++, Python) are essential
- Fluent in English
- Experience in light ion beam therapy and/or Monte Carlo particle transport simulations is an asset
- Present results at international conferences
- Good organizational skills and very team-minded
- Flexible and solution oriented

**A unique offer** that inspires:
For the advertised position we offer a gross annual salary from € 32.204,30 (on a 30h basis) with the possibility of overpayment, depending on professional qualifications and experience.

Further information on the IDEAL project can be found here and on the IBA-Dosimetry here.
