Master Thesis "Development and Characterization of Thick Anodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries" - Center for Low-Emission Transport - Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are the centrepiece of modern electric drive concepts. In order to improve the energy density and to reduce production costs, manufacturing processes need to be optimised and redesigned. Especially electrode production bears a lot of potential for improvement. - The scope of this master thesis is to fabricate thick graphite anodes using a multi-layer coating method. - You will deal intensively with topics related to: - slurry formulation and rheological characterisation as key elements of environmentally friendly water-based electrode processing. - optimising coating parameters to establish mechanically stable and defect-free electrodes. - fabrication and electrochemical characterisation of battery cells at coin and pouch cell level. - You will establish ideal process parameters for fabricating graphite anodes with high energy density using the multi-layer coating technique. - You will investigate how multi-layering affects the mechanical integrity (e.g., optical analysis, adhesion tests) of the electrode and carry out electrochemical measurements (e.g., galvanostatic cycling, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy). - You will take multi-layer anode coating from a lab scale to an industrial relevant manufacturing process on our research pilot line in the battery materials laboratory. - You will gain hands-on experience on the process of Li-ion battery manufacturing as a whole - from electrode production (slurry mixing, coating, calendaring) to cell assembly. - You will gain insight into the applied research working environment, share ideas within our team and get to know new processes and recent technological developments. - You will gain experience in working with an international group of scientists, research engineers and technicians and build up your professional network. Your qualifications as an **Ingenious Partner**: - Ongoing master’s studies preferably in the fields of chemistry, electrochemistry, physics, materials science, or similar - Previous experience with experimental work in chemical lab is desired - High level of commitment and team spirit - Very good command of English or German (written and spoken at technical level) **What to expect**: EUR 1105,10 gross per month for 20 hours/week based on the collective agreement.
