To support this new course, VIT is seeking Expressions of Interest from suitably qualified academics for appointment as Research Project Supervisors in Information Technology. These supervisory positions will form part of VIT's research supervision pool and will provide thesis supervision to Master of IT Research candidates. Appointments may be made on a full‑time, part‑time, or sessional basis. The role requires supervising students through all stages of the research project, providing methodological guidance, contributing to research training, and maintaining an active research profile in accordance with the Position Description. It is a senior academic appointment (Level C or above, i.e. Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, or Professor). The role may be offered on a full‑time, part‑time, or sessional basis. The primary purpose of the role is to guide HDR students through their research projects and theses, ensuring high academic standards, successful completion, and a positive research experience. In addition to student supervision, the appointee is expected to engage in their own research, contribute to research training (e.g. workshops or coursework in research methods), and maintain an active publication record. Key Responsibilities Postgraduate Thesis Supervision Provide high‑quality academic supervision to HDR candidates. This includes guiding students through all stages of the research project – from research proposal and design to data collection, analysis, and thesis writing – to ensure successful and timely thesis completion. The supervisor will foster a collaborative and supportive learning environment, helping students meet research milestones and uphold high academic and professional standards. Research Training & Workshops Develop and deliver research training activities to build students' research capabilities. This involves conducting workshops or seminars on research methodologies, ethics, academic writing, and data analysis techniques, as well as contributing to teaching in research methods coursework units as needed. Expert Guidance in Methodology Provide expert advice on research design and methodology. The supervisor will mentor students in selecting appropriate research methods, utilising analytical tools (such as Python, MATLAB, SPSS, NVivo), and employing proper data analysis techniques relevant to IT and / or business research. This includes ensuring students understand and apply rigorous research protocols and methodologies throughout their projects. Research Integrity and Compliance Ensure all supervised research projects comply with ethical standards and institutional policies. The supervisor will advise students on human research ethics applications, integrity in data privacy and management, and adherence to research protocols and experimental design guidelines. They will oversee that ethics approvals are obtained where necessary and that students conduct research responsibly and safely. Research Funding Applications Lead and / or contribute to the development of research funding proposals to internal and external bodies, including government schemes, industry partnerships, and competitive grant programs. Support the development of a research funding culture by encouraging student and staff participation in grant‑related activities, and integrate funded research opportunities into HDR supervision and training where appropriate. Active Research and Publication Maintain an active personal research program in a relevant discipline and integrate it with supervisory practice. The appointee is expected to undertake research and produce scholarly publications. This may include collaborating on research projects, publishing in peer‑reviewed journals and conferences, and bringing new insights back into research training for HDR students. Academic Leadership and Engagement Contribute to the broader research culture and academic community within VIT. This includes participating in Research and Scholarship Committees (as required), contributing to the development of research training courses, and mentoring less experienced supervisors or early‑career researchers. Administrative Duties Complete administrative tasks associated with supervision and research training. This includes keeping accurate records of student progress, reporting on student milestones, and contributing to improvements in policies, procedures, and / or practices related to HDR. The appointee will attend relevant meetings and training sessions and ensure compliance with all VIT policies (such as the Code of Conduct, OHS requirements, etc., as applicable). Essential Criteria Qualifications A doctoral degree (PhD) in a relevant discipline such as Information Technology, Business, or a closely related field. Research Track Record Evidence of being research active in recent years, with a strong record of scholarly research outcomes. A higher standing (Level D / E) would further require a sustained record of research excellence. Supervision Experience Proven experience in supervising postgraduate research students and leading them to successful thesis completions. Ideally, the candidate has supervised Master's and / or PhD researchers through all stages of their candidature. The candidate should be familiar with best practices in research supervision and be able to provide strong mentorship. Research Methods & Analytical Skills In‑depth knowledge of research methodologies relevant to IT and / or business, and proficiency with analytical tools and software commonly used in those fields. Communication & Interpersonal Skills Excellent written and verbal communication skills and well‑developed interpersonal abilities. Knowledge of Research Ethics and Governance A sound understanding of Australian and international research ethics, integrity, and governance frameworks. The candidate should be knowledgeable about human research ethics processes, confidentiality and data security, and the Australian code for responsible research conduct. Experience in guiding students through ethics applications or compliance training will be highly regarded.
