The Team The Older Persons Mental Health Service (OPMHS) includes the community team and the Roy Fagan Centre (RFC). The community team is a subspecialist multidisciplinary team led by old age psychiatrists, that provides assessment, management, treatment and/or support for a range of circumstances. People are generally seen by the OPMHS community team when there is a mental health condition and age-related frailty, or a mental health condition and dementia, or a dementia with psychosocial complexity. Assistance and intervention are holistic and biopsychosocial, and engage the patient as well as their family, carer, or other supports. Care is provided in collaboration with family, carers, friends, service providers, primary health, hospitals, or other specialties. Younger people with neurodegenerative conditions are also seen in the OPMHS South community team. The OPMHS community team operates under a newly developed statewide Operational Service Manual. The RFC provides inpatient care for elderly patients with mental illness, often with age-related frailty or comorbid dementia. It is also a quaternary referral centre for people with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). People with young onset dementia or Huntington’s disease are sometimes admitted to RFC. The interventions provided for patients admitted to RFC range from fully restorative, through to palliative and terminal. Most patients are admitted under the Older Person’s Mental Health Service, but up to ten patients are admitted under the Geriatrics service. A new Operational Service Manual is now being finalised as part of a reform program which has been running for four years. The Roy Fagan Centre clinical team is led by Old Age Psychiatrists who train psychiatry registrars, and the senior nurses who lead nurses with general and psychiatric training and experience. The care assistants, enrolled nurses, and general nurses have a newly enhanced leadership structure. The multidisciplinary team includes social workers and other allied health professionals, and as part of the reform program the appointment of more allied health professionals is underway. The Waratah Unit is an eight bed Specialist Dementia Care Unit, run in collaboration with Glenview Residential Aged Care Home and Dementia Support Australia. The OPMHS provides psychiatrist, nursing, and social work in‑reach to Waratah. The Role We are looking for an Old Age Psychiatrist to work in both the RFC (including on call) and community team. They may be required to provide support to Waratah Unit. You will need Demonstrated knowledge and ability to implement evidence‑based practices and adhere to contemporary clinical standards and policies relevant to OPMHS. Recent experience in an older person’s mental health setting. Demonstrated knowledge and skill in risk assessment and risk management in relation to the clinical management of older clients with mental health problems, dementia, and/or physical health issues. Demonstrated capacity to exercise a significant level of independent clinical judgement in completing primary tasks while taking into account relevant policies and protocols and working as a team player in engaging and providing clinical leadership to the multidisciplinary team decision‑making process as appropriate. Demonstrated patient focus by displaying personal qualities of respect, politeness and empathy while at the same time being able to confidently balance this with duty of care considerations requiring appropriately responsive and confident clinical decision‑making to enhance clinical safety and clinical outcomes.
