Job Description The Age is looking for a Melbourne property reporter to cover the local and national property market. Responsibilities Report on the property market in Melbourne and Victoria, pitching original ideas on house price changes, buying and selling trends and the best suburbs for homebuyers. Report on the national property market, including economist predictions and the impact of interest rate moves on property prices. Cover Melbourne’s prestige property market, breaking news of significant sales and listings, and emerging trend stories. Cover Melbourne’s auction market, including on‑ground Saturday auction coverage and broader trend stories. Use large data sets to develop ideas or back up tips, working with data to a high degree of accuracy and clarity. Meet breaking, daily and weekend deadlines independently or as part of a team. Develop and maintain relationships with a wide variety of key contacts. Qualifications A keen interest in the property market. Previous property‑reporting experience is advantageous but not essential. Proven journalism experience. Exceptional copy, able to write hard and soft leads to deadline. Strong command of the market or rapid learning ability to write stories with complexity and depth. Familiarity with Melbourne’s geography and culture, or a willingness to learn quickly. Established contacts or skills in building new relationships. Numerous ideas and strong news judgement, plus problem‑solving skills and independence. Excellent attention to detail. Additional Information This is a 6‑month contract position and some Saturday shifts are required. How We Work At Nine, flexible work options vary by role and team.
