Overview Operations Manager (Medical Devices Manufacturing) at Alcon/Cylite. The role leads the growing production team and related support functions at the Mulgrave site, overseeing diverse teams to manufacture next generation ophthalmic diagnostics devices. The position requires collaboration with Research and Development, Engineering, Quality, and other departments to support rapid growth in production capabilities. About the Role The Operations Manager leads the production and related support functions at the Mulgrave facility, managing teams across shifts to meet safety, quality, delivery, and cost targets. The role involves planning production activities, monitoring labour hours, organising Work Orders, maintaining 5S standards, and fostering a culture of quality, safety and accountability aligned with the site QMS. Responsibilities Lead and manage the production team across multiple shifts to meet safety, quality, delivery, and cost targets. Plan production activities to meet instrument delivery targets, monitor labour hours, team composition, and authorize overtime; generate Work Orders to maximise utilisation and optimise build rates. Maintain established 5S and lead new 5S improvements across team work areas. Instil a culture of quality, safety and accountability, ensuring products are manufactured in accordance with the site QMS. Lead and manage the Production Engineering team to address root causes of production quality and non-conformance issues and implement improvements; support issue escalation as appropriate. Incorporate feedback from manufacturing on manufacturability, yield improvements, quality control and inspection into new design developments through the design review and engineering change process. Support Product Review work instructions and make change recommendations for process improvements. Coordinate cross-functionally with engineering and other process partners to improve product quality and reduce build times. Collaborate with the manufacturing automation and systems team to develop and maintain machine maintenance schedules and ensure critical spares availability. Lead the warehouse team to ensure raw materials and finished goods are received, stored, picked, stocked and shipped efficiently. Plan material availability with Supply Chain and Quality teams; coordinate shipping and logistics with freight forwarders and ensure proper documentation. Oversee facilities maintenance of critical building systems and manage contracts/contractors as needed; plan, budget, and schedule facility modifications as directed. Assess headcount needs, define required skills for new hires, maintain capacity plans, and support development and enforcement of manufacturing systems, policies and procedures. Monitor material and labour costs and identify opportunities for cost savings. Experience / Qualifications Degree in Engineering, Physics, or related field. 10+ years in manufacturing; 5+ years in a production lead or production management role (preferably in medical devices). Experience leading a multidisciplinary team of technicians and engineers in a production environment. Strong communication skills (verbal and written) with technicians, team leaders, engineers, and other production support departments. Experience setting targets, tracking progress, and guiding a team to achieve them. Proven leadership with a safety and quality focus. Ability to deliver constructive feedback and adapt to changing work assignments in a fast-paced environment. Experience in ISO 13485 manufacturing or similar regulated industry.
