National Film and Sound Archive of Australia – Pyrmont NSW About the National Film and Sound Archive The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) is Australia's audiovisual archive, telling the national story by collecting, preserving and sharing audiovisual media. The collection dates back to making it one of the world’s oldest, and is one of the country’s most accessed cultural collections, with around 125 million views per year. Following increased government investment, NFSA is in a period of significant transformation, aiming to establish itself as Australia’s most dynamic and valued cultural organisation. NFSA aligns its work with the National Cultural Policy "Revive", with the principle of 'First Nations First' being a priority. NFSA’s collection includes significant First Nations film, video and audio recordings, and the Institution works to collect, preserve and share them in a culturally safe and respectful manner. Our First Nations Engagement Strategy Outlines objectives such as ensuring a culturally safe workplace, improving understanding of First Nations material, developing and preserving the collection, repatriating cultural access for First Nations communities, and placing First Nations stories front and centre in sharing activities. Reconciliation Action Plan NFSA has a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) in place since and launched its first Stretch RAP in, embedding reconciliation activity across the organisation. About the Team The First Nations Engagement team comprises six staff based in Sydney and Canberra. The team is supervised by the Deputy CEO and works closely with the CEO, Chief Curator and Chief Collection Preservation Officer. It brings expertise in curatorial, archival, digitisation, audiovisual production and project management, and works with every area of the business to guide the responsible management, custodianship and appropriate sharing of First Nations material within the national collection. Head of First Nations Engagement – Opportunity The Head of First Nations Engagement is a senior leadership role, reporting to the Deputy CEO. The role advises the Board, the First Nations Engagement Committee, and works closely with the CEO (the RAP Champion) and the Senior Executive Team. The successful candidate will be an established First Nations leader in the Australian audiovisual or GLAM sector, being a curator, practitioner, producer, academic or executive. Experience with First Nations values, communities and audiovisual material, and ideally an understanding of archival collecting, is essential. Position availability is limited to Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander people in line with affirmative measures under the Racial Discrimination Act Key Duties Lead research into provenance, language, country of origin, and restrictions or protocols for use of materials in the collection. Re-connect with individuals and communities with ties to First Nations materials, exploring opportunities to repatriate knowledge into digital formats. Enrich the catalogue with metadata created by First Nations people and develop protocols for viewing, use and restrictions. Engage with Australian and global First Nations practitioners and institutions to share best practice in managing collections in legacy institutions. Ensure compliance with ICIP and advance culturally appropriate collection use at all times. Recommend actions to senior leadership to maximise value for First Nations practitioners, institutions and communities. Responsibilities Consult with other leaders and coordinate the First Nations Engagement team to ensure compliance with NFSA’s principles and the First Nations Engagement Strategy. Partner with peers to design and deliver best outcomes. Represent NFSA at external forums and conferences, promoting First Nations-led approaches. Contribute to cross-organisational strategic and planning groups. Lead by example to sustain a safe, productive, collegial workplace culture. Selection Criteria Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of First Nations cultures and issues affecting First Nations peoples. Demonstrated engagement and acceptance within the First Nations community. Leadership capacity and high-level project management experience in a diversified workplace. High-level communication and interpersonal skills, including liaison with a range of stakeholders and sensitive communication with First Nations people. Experience with audiovisual material and understanding of issues relating to collection and use of First Nations audiovisual content. Strong understanding of the film, television, radio or GLAM sector and its relationship to First Nations cultures and issues. Desired Skills and Experience Mandatory : Experience working with First Nations material in film, broadcast, sound, arts, media or academia. Desirable : Relevant tertiary qualifications (media, journalism, production, curatorial, arts). Eligibility Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander descent (affirmative-measures Indigenous role).
