Position Purpose The Education Consultant plays an important role in strengthening student wellbeing and inclusive education across the independent school sector. The position delivers a comprehensive range of services including face-to-face consultancy, tailored professional learning, briefings, group presentations, conference facilitation, and instructional coaching designed to support principals, school leadership teams, teachers, and professional support staff. In this role, the Education Consultant collaborates closely with school leaders to strengthen student wellbeing, mental health, and inclusive education outcomes. The position supports the implementation of a range of tailored programs focused on wellbeing and anti-bullying. A further key responsibility is responding to school requests for specialised advice regarding individual student matters. These may relate to academic development, behaviour, social or emotional needs, mental health difficulties, school refusal, gender identity, or combinations of these factors. The Consultant provides informed guidance and supports the facilitation of individual planning processes, including in relation to school attendance matters. Key Accountabilities Operational Accountabilities Lead meaningful wellbeing and anti-bullying initiatives, delivering key components of long-term projects and guiding school leaders through thoughtful, strategic conversations that strengthen whole-school approaches. Design and facilitate high-quality professional learning – both face-to-face and online – for staff across independent schools, supported by the development of practical and engaging resources. Focus areas may include whole-school wellbeing and behaviour frameworks, high-impact wellbeing strategies, social and emotional learning, and positive classroom practices. Provide responsive, expert support to schools through a dedicated intake service, assisting with a wide range of student matters related to cognitive, sensory, physical, and social-emotional development. Advise and collaborate with schools to develop meaningful and effective Individual Plans that support student access to curriculum, wellbeing, behaviour, mental health, and health care needs. Work in partnership with schools on risk assessment and planning, ensuring safe, informed, and proactive approaches for students. Facilitate attendance planning processes, including leading Compulsory Attendance Conferences to support improved student engagement and outcomes. Contribute to strategic projects and priorities across the Portfolio, helping shape impactful initiatives and cross-team collaboration. Represent AISNSW and the independent school sector with professionalism, contributing to committees, working groups, and sector forums in a confident and credible manner. Qualifications, Experience and Knowledge/Skills Qualifications Undergraduate education qualifications and post-graduate qualifications in wellbeing or leadership. What Experience are we looking for? Recent experience in a school-based leadership role, preferably a wellbeing leadership role. What Knowledge/Skills are we looking for? Capacity to maintain confidentiality, discretion and deal respectfully with sensitive student matters and personal information. Understanding of effective approaches to promote mental health and wellbeing within the context of a multi-tiered system of supports. Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the Australian Student Wellbeing Framework. Ability to identify links between wellbeing and curriculum. Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, including disability legislation. Capacity to lead strategic discussions with school leadership teams in order to advance whole-school improvement and promote wellbeing initiatives. Demonstrates expertise and confidence in facilitating impactful professional learning experiences for adult learners through diverse delivery methods. Capacity to fulfil an instructional leadership/coaching role when guiding and advising schools. Deep understanding of curriculum delivery, adjustments and inclusive practices. Desire to be open-minded, adaptable and solutions-focused when collaborating with schools around multifaceted student matters. A valid NSW Working with Children Check Clearance for paid employment. A current NSW Driver’s Licence Capacity to travel across metropolitan Sydney and beyond, including across NSW into regional areas, which involves being away overnight, at times for consecutive nights. Flexibility with early starts and late finishes based on travel requirements. Flexible work arrangements are available. Understanding of the NSW independent school sector and the role of AISNSW as a peak body and member-based service organisation.
