Research Associate (Software Developer) – Level A Job Reference: Overview This role offers the opportunity to work closely with senior software developers, system architects, and research specialists from academia, industry and Defence partners. You will design, develop, test and maintain intelligent, distributed software systems that support cutting‑edge research in artificial intelligence and computing. Responsibilities Contribute to and support applied research activities, including experimentation, evaluation and prototype development in AI and distributed systems. Design, develop and test software modules and tools that enable distributed and AI‑enabled research. Build and maintain containerised and automated environments using Docker, Kubernetes, or equivalent platforms. Support data integration, validation and performance testing to ensure reliable and reproducible research outcomes. Prepare and maintain project milestones, technical documentation, version control repositories and research reports. Collaborate effectively with researchers, software engineers and industry or Defence partners to deliver high‑quality research and development outputs. Selection Criteria Essential A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science or a related discipline. Demonstrated programming proficiency (e.g., Python, C++, Java) and sound understanding of software‑engineering practices. Experience with DevOps/MLOps tools and workflows, including containerisation and automation (e.g., Docker, CI/CD, Git). Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research and technical team. Strong communication, documentation and analytical skills. Desirable Familiarity with cloud, virtual machines or distributed computing environments. Exposure to machine‑learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch). Interest in developing scalable and secure software systems in partnership with industry and Defence collaborators. Role Requirements Applicants must be Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents. Security clearance may be required depending on project scope and data access. Compliance with security, confidentiality and research‑integrity standards relevant to Defence or sensitive research is mandatory. Successful candidates will undergo National Police Clearance and other background, integrity and reference checks to Curtin’s satisfaction. Benefits 17% superannuation plus a variety of salary packaging options. Paid parental leave (26 weeks for primary caregiver and 3 weeks for non‑primary), personal leave (14 days) and annual leave (20 days). 12 public holidays per year, including Easter Tuesday, and 2 extra University Days over the Christmas/New Year period.
