Head of Department - Science Somerset College on the Gold Coast is seeking an outstanding Head of Department – Science to join its Academic Leadership Team. This role will shape the strategic direction of Science education, fostering a culture of excellence, innovation and curiosity throughout the College. The Role The Head of Department – Science reports to the Deputy Head – Studies and leads a team of educators dedicated to delivering engaging, rigorous and innovative Science learning across Years 7‑12. Responsibilities include strategic leadership of curriculum, pedagogy and staff development, and managing departmental operations in line with the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) and International Baccalaureate (IB) frameworks. Key Responsibilities Provide academic leadership, promoting excellence in teaching, learning and student outcomes. Oversee curriculum design, assessment, moderation and reporting across Years 7‑12 (including IB MYP and QCAA senior syllabi). Mentor, coach and develop science teachers, fostering a culture of professional growth and reflective practice. Manage departmental operations, including budget, resources, facilities and laboratory safety. Ensure alignment with College values, strategic goals and external compliance requirements. Inspire students through innovation, enrichment and extension in the sciences. About You You are an accomplished science educator and leader with a strong understanding of contemporary teaching and learning. You will bring: Proven experience in a departmental or curriculum leadership role within a school setting. Understanding of science curriculum design and assessment (Physics, Chemistry, Biology and/or Psychology). Experience teaching at senior levels, familiar with both QCAA and IB MYP frameworks (desirable). Capacity to lead, mentor and inspire teachers through collaboration and shared professional learning.
