Position Overview: Matouk Joyner Lawyers is seeking an ambitious and dedicated Junior Solicitor to support its high-performing criminal defense practice. The role involves assisting with complex matters, preparing high-quality legal documents, attending court and instructing counsel and managing clients. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong analytical ability, sound legal judgment, excellent communication skills and high attention to detail with precision in case preparation, drafting and Court presentation. A candidate who has a Sound knowledge of Criminal Law practice and procedure would be preferred. Main Tasks and Responsibilities: While your day-to-day responsibilities may vary, your primary duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: Conduct detailed client interviews to obtain instructions, assess criminal law issues, and assist in developing strategic defense approaches consistent with the firm’s high standards of representation. Support the preparation of complex criminal matters by undertaking legal research, reviewing evidence, coordinating expert reports, arranging witness preparation, and managing all procedural requirements for court proceedings. Prepare and critically review police and prosecution briefs related to matters handled by the firm, ensuring accuracy and compliance. Assist senior solicitors and counsel in court appearances for mentions, hearings, and sentencing, contributing to the delivery of strong, precise advocacy in line with the firm’s premium criminal defense practice. Provide preliminary advice to clients on criminal charges, procedural requirements, potential outcomes, and strategic options, ensuring advice is clear, accurate, and aligned with the firm’s client-focused service approach. Act as trustee or guardian where clients require formal legal oversight as part of broader criminal or associated legal matters. Qualifications Required for this role: A bachelor’s degree or higher qualification. The applicant must possess Australian Practising Certificate. Experience and Other Requirements: At least 1 year of relevant experience in a similar field. Excellent written and verbal English communication skills. Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in all work. A collaborative work ethic with the ability to work effectively in team environments. Skilled in managing client matters and providing clear legal guidance. Proficient in preparing Legal Aid files and instructing barristers effectively. Proven ability to meet deadlines under any circumstances. Possesses an analytic and inquisitive mindset with excellent problem-solving skills. Salary: $77,000 to $82,000 plus superannuation.
