The Role An Expression of Interest is open with EPE for a highly competent and motivated Forensic Biologist to join our specialist team supporting Defence and law enforcement operations. It is anticipated that the role will commence early in 2026 and for potentially up to a 2‑year contract and leave you with excellent experience for your CV. We are seeking a highly skilled Forensic Biologist to implement a DNA workflow and direction to the validation of said workflow. Additionally, the role will support laboratory outcomes through the examination, analysis, and interpretation of biological samples. This role is central to human identification outcomes and contributing to the ongoing development and implementation of our laboratory’s Quality Management System (QMS). Operating within extant frameworks, you will conduct forensic DNA analysis in laboratory environments that may support Defence operations in Australia. This position requires precision, scientific expertise, and the ability to operate effectively in dynamic, classified environments. Key Responsibilities Provide technical/specialist direction and input to the human identification workflow validation, in addition to supporting the development and implementation of the Quality Management System (QMS) methodology for the laboratory. Conduct DNA analysis and profiling, including DNA extraction, real‑time PCR quantitation, PCR amplification, separation and analysis from a variety of materials. Recover, examine, and identify biological samples from complex materials and reference samples. Manage and maintain DNA laboratory equipment, ensuring functionality and readiness. Analyse Electropherograms and DNA profiles using Genemapper software. Maintain accurate data handling and chain‑of‑custody protocols. Assist with laboratory equipment management, cleaning, sustaining, and basic maintenance. Collaborate effectively with project managers, intelligence analysts, clients, and technical teams. Support Defence outcomes, including human identification in identity operations and potential disaster recovery contexts. Contribute to training, exercises, and capability validation activities. Ensure strict adherence to safety, biohazard, and contamination prevention procedures. Essential Qualifications and Experience Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Forensic Biology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or a related discipline (postgraduate qualification desirable). Tertiary qualification in genetics, or demonstrated equivalent experience. Skilled in Microsoft Office applications. Must be able to obtain and maintain an AGSVA Security Clearance (minimum NV1). Demonstrated experience in forensic DNA laboratory workflows (extraction, quantitative PCR and amplification). Strong comprehension of validation planning, wet work and documentation. Strong understanding of positive and negative controls in sample preparation, workflows, chain of custody, and contamination prevention. Proficient in analysing and interpreting forensic DNA data. Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across diverse stakeholders. Experience working in fast‑paced environments with multiple competing priorities. Master’s/PhD in Forensic Science, Molecular Biology, or related fields. Experience in military, intelligence, or law enforcement forensic environments. Knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025, ISO‑21043 series and forensic laboratory quality standards. Familiarity with forensic intelligence databases, biometric systems, and rapid DNA technologies.
