Senior Ophthalmic Technicians are a crucial support service within the Ophthalmic specialities. They perform diagnostic tests in different cinics within the department. These include Visual Field Tests, Optical Coherence Tomography, Fundus Photography and icare Tonometry. They also provide support to a team of Ophthalmic Technicians. The Glaucoma service has Senior Technician-led clinics. Some of these clinics are offsite and some Saturday working may be required. Being able to work independently and within a team is essential for the role. You will require excellent communication skills and experience in ophthalmic diagnostic imaging. This role involves considerable patient contact and assessments. Some training will be provided. Ophthalmology is a fascinating, busy environment to learn new skills and make a difference. Main duties of the job To lead on a Technician-led Ophthalmology service and deliver an ophthalmic diagnostic service, within the department of Ophthalmology. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, provide appropriate assessment (and interpretation of results where indicated) for Ophthalmology patients. Manage own caseload of patients prioritising when necessary and accepting urgent referrals as appropriate. To ensure that patients are received in a sympathetic and courteous manner and that cultural difference is catered for. To undertake associated clerical and administrative duties necessary to ensure the effective running of the ophthalmology service. Some sessions will be required at the Community Clinics at Anglia Ruskin University and Saffron Walden Hospital. Person Specification Qualifications NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in health-related subject 5 GCSEs or equivalent All candidates must have the equivalent of GCSE grade C or above in Maths and English Foundation degree or equivalent IT Qualification 3 GCSE pass at Grade C or higher in one or more Science related subjects Experience Experience of working in an Ophthalmology Outpatient setting Has undertaken clinical work Significant previous experience of dealing with patients, customers or members of the public Experience in learning new systems Experience of working in a supervisory role, including teaching and mentoring Experience working in a multidisciplinary team Experience in automated visual field and OCT scan Knowledge Good knowledge of patient care Understanding of issues relating to confidentiality, health and safety and risk management Evidence of extended learning / learning beyond basic competency level, with respect to continuing professional development Knowledge of NHS procedures Awareness of national priorities and initiatives Knowledge of general medical / ophthalmic conditions, equipment and techniques Skills Good verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Capable of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team and liaising with a wide range of people Ability to use own initiative Ability to work unsupervised and follow instructions Adaptable to changing situations due to workload Excellent administrative and clerical skills Able to demonstrate empathy and caring attitude towards others Able to use the Trust's electronic patient records Prepared to undertake recognised mentoring/coaching role.
