The Role We are seeking an Electrical Design Engineer to support the design, development, and delivery of grid‑connected BESS projects. This role spans concept design through to construction support, giving you exposure to the full project lifecycle. You will work across electrical design, system integration, grid connection requirements and technical documentation—collaborating closely with internal engineering teams, OEM partners and EPC contractors to ensure the safe and reliable integration of high‑capacity battery systems into the network. This position is ideal for engineers with a strong electrical design foundation who enjoy both detailed engineering and practical project coordination. Key Responsibilities Electrical Design & Engineering Develop electrical design packages including single‑line diagrams (SLDs), general arrangement drawings, DC/AC cabling layouts, and earthing/bonding design. Support cable sizing, protection coordination and electrical load calculations for BESS installations. Review inverter, transformer, switchgear and auxiliary equipment specifications to ensure system compatibility. Assist in grid compliance design including protection settings, PCC requirements and interface with network service providers. System Integration Coordinate integration of batteries, PCS/inverters, transformers, MV/HV equipment and control systems. Ensure alignment between electrical, civil and SCADA/controls design teams. Collaborate with OEMs to verify technical data sheets and integration requirements. Project Support & Coordination Work with EPCs, subcontractors and internal engineering teams throughout the design and construction phases. Support tender evaluations, design reviews, technical clarifications and value‑engineering discussions. Assist in resolving design issues during construction and commissioning. Standards, Compliance & Quality Ensure electrical designs comply with Australian standards (AS/NZS 3000, AS/NZS 4777, AS 2067, HV/MV standards etc). Incorporate safety‑in‑design requirements including arc‑flash considerations, clearances and protection schemes. Support documentation for grid connection and regulatory submissions. Prepare test plans, FAT documentation and commissioning procedures for electrical equipment. Provide engineering support during equipment installation, onsite inspections and energisation activities. Assist in verifying that electrical works meet design intent, safety standards and performance criteria. Design Documentation & Reporting Produce and maintain high‑quality drawings, design reports, specifications and engineering registers. Review vendor drawings and technical documentation for accuracy and compliance. Capture lessons learned and contribute to design optimisation for future BESS projects. Qualifications & Experience Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline. 3–8 years of experience in electrical design within power systems, substations, renewables, industrial or transmission/distribution projects. Experience producing SLDs, cabling layouts, schematics and electrical calculations. Understanding of HV/MV/LV systems, protection concepts, switchgear, transformers and inverters. Ability to interpret OEM datasheets, network connection requirements and equipment specifications. Strong grounding in Australian electrical standards and design practices. Experience coordinating with multidisciplinary engineering teams. Full working rights within Australia are required; sponsorship is unfortunately not available for this position. Experience working on renewable or BESS projects. Familiarity with grid connection processes, NER requirements, power system studies or R2 testing. Experience with engineering design tools (AutoCAD, EPLAN, PowerFactory, ETAP, or CYMCAP). Prior exposure to commissioning, site inspections or construction support.
