Facility Technician

The Australian BioResources Pty Ltd (ABR) facility in Moss Vale, NSW, is a state‑of‑the‑art, centralised facility specialising in the breeding of congenic, mutant and genetically modified mouse lines for Garvan and partner institutes. Services include import/export, rederivation, cryopreservation, and microinjection using the latest targeting technologies and are supported by a world‑class facility management system called “Stuart”. Opportunity The primary function of Facility Technician is to support animal care staff in the care of animals used in medical research. This involves cleaning and refilling caging, sterilising equipment and consumables, and maintaining a continuous supply of clean materials to animal rooms. The technician also cleans support areas such as staff rooms, administration areas, and change rooms to uphold ABR’s high hygiene standards. Salary & Employment Type Salary: Up to $32.50/hour + 12% superEmployment Type: Casual Benefits Ample opportunities for on‑going training and development Stimulating, diverse and highly international research environment Flexible work arrangements (e.g., start/finish times) 18 weeks paid parental leave for both parents, including paid superannuation Additional leave options: cultural leave, conference leave, community service, study leave Discounted health insurance Lifestyle discounts with community partners What You Will Do Wash cages, trolleys and protective clothing using cage washer and tunnel washer equipment Prepare clean boxes, bedding and consumables for autoclaving using high‑tech autoclaves Fill and supply clean boxes and associated equipment for animal rooms Prepare water pouches for animal rooms using the water pouch machine Prepare equipment and materials for fumigation within the fumigation lock Deliver equipment and materials to animal holding areas, laboratories and related work areas Perform general cleaning and room hygiene – staff rooms, administration rooms, staff change rooms and access corridors Collect food and bedding from storage areas and transport to the animal facility Operate forklift and pallet jack (may be required) Compact water pouches and other materials Occasionally drive the delivery vehicle (may be required) About You No formal qualifications required – on‑job training will be provided Experience in cleaning to a high standard Ability to follow instructions for high‑tech equipment such as autoclaves Good fitness level, including ability to lift and perform general manual labour Strong commitment to animal welfare Capability to work individually or as part of a team Ability to follow instructions and work according to a schedule Strong customer focus and commitment to quality Good communication skills Reliability and patience Desirable Experience or understanding of working within a clean room facility Experience in cleaning commercial buildings Experience operating cage wash equipment and autoclaves Possession of a current driver’s licence About Garvan Garvan Institute of Medical Research is an independent medical research institute in Sydney that delivers scientific and clinical impact on a global basis and partners with organisations that share our vision.
